Carl Landry vs Nick Fazekas, Glen Davis, and Josh McRoberts

    Landry measured out at 6'8 1/2 with a 6'11 wingspan 248lbs

    Fazekas is 6'11 230lbs

    Davis is 6'8 290lbs

McRoberts measured out at 6'10 with a 7'1 wingspan at 240lbs

Athletically, Landry is the best of the bunch, and it's not even close. 37 inch vertical compared to McRobert's 32 inch vert. McRobert's isn't a real stiff as some say, but he does lack some fluidity in his movements. Davis moves well for a big guy, but he can't get off the ground and his lateral quickness isnt too good. Everyone knows Fazekas lacks athleticism.

Toughness is going to be a big factor. McRoberts and Fazekas are both pretty soft and aren't fans of physical play. Davis uses his big body to bang down low. Almost every scouting report raves about Landry's toughness and how he fights in the post.

Defensively, none are anything to write home about. McRoberts may have the tools to be the best defender of the bunch, but his lack of physicality doesnt take advantage of those tools. Landry has the mentality of one of those pesky post defenders, but he will almost always be guarding someone 2 or 3 inches bigger with a much longer wingspan.

Offensively, each has their own niche. Fazekas has a nice outside game, but he cant handle the post. Davis can throw his weight around and has a pretty good jumpshot. McRoberts doesnt have a very good offensive game, but he can handle the ball and pass and play within an offense. Landry has a good midrange game and can play with his back to the basket.

All in all, I think most people are pissed because Landry isnt from an acclaimed basketball school and is under 6'10. He's not vastly undersized as most say (pretty much 6'9). Some parts of his game will need work, but I think he was probably the most polished and ready to play out of those other PF's.

His only real knocks are that he's a bit smaller than ideal, and he lacks explosive athletic ability, even though he ranked 5th at the NBA combine, and his standing vert and max vert were the exact same as Brandan Wright. I think its easier to say that he lacks the explosiveness to make up for his lack of ideal height.

    Anyone wanna add anything?

    I don't buy him being 6' 9" personally.

If he had two more inches on him I'd be very satisfied after seeing his combine results and description of his abilities.

Well he's not 6'9". He was officially measured at 6' 8 1/2" at the combine. And if he had 2 more inches, he'd probably be a lottery pick.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fairly satisfied with the pick. Just hope he will turn out better than Glen Davis who is around the same size and was available.

Yea, because a half-inch or inch makes or breaks a guy's career.

SIGH! People are so hung up on measurables these days it's sick. Bottom line, can the guy play or not? What kind of production has he had against what competition? Who cares if he is 6'81/2, 6'9 or 6'10. The ONLY thing that matters is if he can effect positively to winning.

    Zach Randolph - 6'9
    David Lee - 6'9
    Ben Wallace - 6'9
    Antonio McDyess - 6'9
    Ike Diogu - 6'8
    Shelden Williams - 6'9
    Sean May - 6'9
    Udonis Haslem - 6'8
    Antawn Jamison - 6'9
    David West - 6'9
    Nick Collison - 6'9
    Carlos Boozer - 6'8
    Paul Millsap - 6'8
    Al Harrington - 6'9
    Elton Brand - 6'8
    Kurt Thomas - 6'9
    Kenny Thomas - 6'7

All good 4's and those of which have been mentioned more than 1000 times on these boards as guys fans want to see the Rockets acquire.

If you don't like the pick, you don't like the pick but please don't spew out crap about a half-inch or inch as a basis of if he will make it in the league or how good ultimately he will be for the Rockets.

He measured 6'7 3/4 in socks and 6'8 1/2 in shoes. Herbert Hill measured 6'7 3/4 in socks and 6'9 3/4 in shoes, Al Horford measure 6'8 3/4 in socks and 6'9 3/4 in shoes. So basically he is 1 inch shorter than Horford who's the best power forward in the draft.

    1 inch isn't too bad.

i have no problem with the landry pick.

we just need a more established pf from FA and i'll be happy.

They aren't the same size. Right now, Glen Davis is over 40 lbs. heavier. In a couple of years, Davis will be about 70 lbs heavier. Landry is so much more athletic and mobile than Davis it isn't funny. Pairing Davis and Yao together would be a disaster. Like someone else said in another thread, Big Fatty will be out of basketball in a couple of years.

It's funny. People hate this Landry pic so much they keep knocking 2 inches off of his height. He's pretty much 6'9 and not 6'7.

I just wish there was some video on this guy. I would feel much better about the pic if I could see him play.

In terms of attitude and outlook I like what I've heard from Landry. He seems both agressive/determined, and teamwork oriented. He sounds like he will work hard, be open to coaching, and be willing to play defense and do the little things.

I don't know how to rate him in this regard relative to the others mentioned.

The low rebounding productivity is an issue in my estimation. I don't have the detailed numbers available but the others mentioned have been more productive in this respect.

It's a shame Landry is only 6'3 or I might get excited after reading this comparison

Landry is a very solid player. I am a Purdue student. I have watched several Purdue games. One of which is against Ohio state. Landry did a good job against Oden. I remember he even block one shot of Oden. He is a player with heart. Purdue lost by 11pts. But until the last 7-8 minutes, Purdue is still leading Ohio state. Landry is the reason Purdue can keep up with Ohio state.

oooo I like his wingspan. Having a 6'11 wingspan essentially makes him a 6'9 player at least. Just ask Jason Maxielle.

How can the guy have a darn near 7 foot wingspan, but only a 8'6" standing reach?

    great thread and original post

everyone said we should have gotten a PF and we did, there was not one there at 26 that wasnt there at 31

if we had gotten any of the other ones this whole board would be complaining that the pf we got is either: too fat, too slow, or overrated (mcroberts, imo)

so we got landry, a relatively unknown player to this board and most are complaining that hes, too short

and i if can add my 2 cents, i know we didnt need another PG, but we picked up the extra pick, give them credit for getting 2 more picks in the draft, everyone here has been complaining about jvg and his slow half court offense, now you got a guy with blazing speed, get ready to run, i like him as a pick, just didnt need him or trade some others

The standing reach is a killer. He has a wideframe? He reach is 4 inches shorter than most PFs. For comparison, Haslem in shoes is 6'7.75", a full inch shorter than Landry but has a standing reach of 8'10". If his arms were only longer, he would be a better rebounder.
