For some reason, there have been a few other similar reports in the last week:

    http://www.360-gamer.com/news.asp?id=1143

I didn't realize it was this bad, assuming these are accurate and a decent indication of the hardware issues. Along with the heating issues, it sounds like there are some design flaws with the x-clamps (although I guess that is related to the heating issues). At least, that's what some of the "engineers" on message boards are saying.

Really, when my Xbox 360 broke down nobody I contacted would take it. I had to call MS to get it taken care of but it took awhile to get it back.

A friend of mine fixed his by tearing it open and adding a heatsink to the ram. This probably on par with the PS2 malfunctioning rumors.

Remember the good ole' days, when all you had to do was blow into the cartridge and tap it a couple of times? :D

How bad was it? I've had 3-4 ps2's and the only one that had a disc error reading problem was the first one purchased on day one. What was great about Sony back in the days, was that they fixed the system for free three years after the laser died. I'm not sure how they'll treat the ps3 if something like this occurs, but if it's like last gen., I wouldn't worry about it.

I remember the first gen ps1 had a notorious disc error reading problem which was easily solved by flipping the system sideways or upside down. I thought it was funny that my system had to be placed upside down for it to work properly.

I think it's worse. The PS2 had problems, but IMO the 360's rates are probably higher.

Yeah, I think it is worse too (in terms of failure rates and even the malfunctions themselves). I heard early PS1s were pretty bad (as mentioned by chow_yun_fat), so it might be close to that. I can't remember what all the issues were with that though, so the two might not be comparable (DREs compared to hardware failure?).

the people who i knew who had ps2 the first 2 years when they came out had several problems. 3 close friends, 3 break downs. BUt at this point in 360s life, it shouldnt be this bad.

Every friend of mine that I know that has a 360 has gotten the red rings of death.

That is about 4 people. I have not (knock on wood).

So in my limited experience 4 out of 5 people have had the red rings of death.

I am personally on my 4th 360. The previous 3 all ended up with the rings of death.

Did you actually buy four of those pieces of shi'ite, or were three of them free replacements?

no I have no need for 4 360's. I sent all three previous consoles to microsoft to get fixed and somehow have managed to not have to pay for repairs, but did have to pay for shipping it off. There is no excuse for a product being this faulty. I LOVE the system but have had a bunch of headaches dealing with this issue. Hopefully the one I have now will continue to work.

That and a good slap to the side of my Atari or my friends Intellivision always did the trick.
