Unless one of the dudes is a gem a la Horry, Cassell, Mobley, etc...the team didn't help itself get out of the first round.
ill hold judgement for now. personally i cant believe we passed on talents like byars and splitter. but i wont write off brooks just yet.
Well lets give Morey some time. Who knows he might do something to cheer about one of these days. 2 or 3 of our guards will probably be traded I'm guessing.
If any of these players become even a ROTATION player it will be a good draft, most teams drafting picks 26 and lower do not get a good player. The Rockets and Morey will prove their worth in trades and free agency... I do not expect any of these players to make an impact and will be pleasently surprised if they do. Grade C- DD
so if they are what we need, and we won't keep 5 guards, I assume a trade involving either Vspan and/or Alston will happen soon??
No we did NOT GET WHAT WE WANTED!!! If you're saying that then you probably think the Astro's are about to make the playoffs!!! Even teams with NO FREAKING DRAFT PICKS DID BETTER THAN THE ROX DID TONIGHT!!!! FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-------- Unless Antonio MacDyse (sp?) signs (and soon) or we get another actual SHOOTING GUARD to go with our 15 undersized nonshooting point guards, then this, in one of the deepest drafts in the history of the NBA will go down as one of the ROX worst..... Hell, the Knicks can't find someone to trade their tiny powerhouse PG to and he's got to be better than the one we just drafted.... Anything higher than a "D+" from those grading the draft (I mean B-ball experts like FOX Sports, ESPN, etc) and I'll be absolutely floored!!!!
There's one little caviat when it comes to analyzing Moneyball moves. The very idea of moneyball and sabermetrics is using statistics as a way to find under-valued and overlooked players that can contribute. Hence, in baseball you find some really random draft picks that are totally out of the blue because of moneyball analysis. Hence, it's unfair to compare Morey picks to the ESPN view of things because they engage in hyped up sensationalism generated by a select few ESPN analysts that generally favor traditional scouting analysis (Hollinger being the one exception) Morey doesn't exclusively rely on statistical metrics like some baseball execs but you can expect odder picks as a result of its use. I think anyone who didn't think something like this wouldn't happen is fooling themselves. i'll give him the whole offseason before I start critiquing him, but even to me, this wasn't a great start. But hey, remember when we are all b****ing about taking Luther Head over Wayne Simien. I think we all know how that turned out and everyone thought we were reaching with Luther.
Draft grade F- till proven otherwise. I will praise him if he produces a championship contending team before I pass away.
I blame cheapo Les Alexander for hiring this kid Morey on the cheap, someone who might have got good grades in college but with no real NBA experience. By the way, ESPN's Chad Ford reserved his worst grade for the Rockets: "Houston Rockets D+ Round 1: Aaron Brooks (26) Round 2: Carl Landry (31), Brad Newley (54) Analysis: New Houston GM Daryl Morey may be the resident Rocket scientist, but I don't get this draft. Brooks is an undersized point guard who's really more of a 2 guard in the Earl Boykins mode. Landry is tough and physical, which fits a need in Houston, but I don't think he's as good as Glen Davis, who was available. Newley has talent, but does he really want to be a role player for the Rockets? If not, he can just stay in Australia and be a star. Morey's smart and he may make me look very stupid in a few years for saying this, but I think the Rockets' draft was one of the worst of the night."
Ok, I will tell you what's wrong with McRoberts. First, Carolina fans call him McRobot for a reason. Yeah he can dribble the ball for a 7 footer, but so can alot of other guys and he isn't fluid at all. Offensively, he is weak in the paint despite his size. He doesn't have one 'go to' move with his back to the basket. He is an underachiever. Last year 'dook' needed him to step up big time to a be a 20-10 guy and the guy flat out fell on his face. You know it's bad when you are a Mcd AA and the only thing they can compliment you on is your passing. Lastly, he has a major attitude. So tell me what's good about him that warrants a first round pick? Obviously nobody else in the first round felt he was worth the spot either. As far as Brooks goes, he is a solid ball player. I watched more PAC 10 basketball this year than ever before. He played in some clutch games and was fun to watch. I am not sure about the size difference but he reminds me of Darrell Armstrong, when he played for the Magic.

Morey's last three years with the Celtics, the Celtics drafted: 2004 NBA 1 15 Al Jefferson 1 24 Delonte West Saint Joseph's University 1 25 Tony Allen Oklahoma State University 2 11 Justin Reed University of Mississippi 2003 NBA 1 16 Troy Bell Boston College 1 20 Dahntay Jones Duke University 2 27 Brandon Hunter Ohio University 2002 NBA 2 21 Darius Songaila Wake Forest University I can't say I'm too confident with our picks considering how most of these players panned out. Troy bell at 16?! Al Jefferson is probably the only bright spot in this track record, but its less of a guessing game when youre that high up in the draft.
