    Here is a flashback:

Anyone remember when Gene did commercials for Kuppenheimer?

This is a sad day, indeed. Gene is a legend. He's my favorite sports broadcaster of them all. His cadence perfectly matches the flow of the game and the beauty of it. I will certainly miss his calls.

My goodness, I heard them on 610 today but didn't know they were retiring, and so soon. I have been listening to them since I started following sports when I was like 9. I don't get to see the TV broadcasts so I listen to Gene and Jim every game. I can't imagine listening to a Rockets on the radio without them. A truly sad day for me and any true Rockets fan.

The mission is clear cut, we need to win a championship for Gene and Jim.

The door is now open for the return of the great Art Eckman.

    "Oh Mother!" - '97

"Houston your eagle has landed!" - '94

"Stay cool Houston, stay cool!" - '94

And getting to meet them before games was an absolute highlight; they even mentioned my name on the radio. Classy folks.

I do wish they were on FM so it makes a clearer stream on League Pass.

    One other Gene memory:

What game was it that he literally blew the station of the air with his screams?

Was it the Spurs/Rockets in 93 where the Robinson tip in was allowed that cost us home court against Seattle?

My childhood is finally over.... these guys were the last piece of the great championship runs. No matter how the season was going they could still make a game interesting and there is nothing like hearing "How Sweet it is."

I guess at least we still have Clyde/Bull on the microphone.

Nice article over at Jeff's site - link

Everyone seems to be forgetting about this not-so-memorable (or intelligible) moment:

Peterson: All right, here we go. Chambers will throw it inbounds for the Utah Jazz. Karl Malone's probably going to try to muscle it or they'll shoot the outside shot, one or the other. Chambers looking, still looking. Out it comes. Hornacek. Twelve on the clock. . . "Well, start the time clock! They're not even starting the clock!"

    Foley: Start the clock!

Peterson: They didn't even start the clock!

    Foley: They haven't yet!

Peterson: They haven't even started the clock!

    Foley: They haven't yet!

Peterson: They haven't started the clock!

Foley: (Unintelligible.) Something's got to give here! What's going on?

Peterson: Can you believe it? They haven't even started the clock! "We got it anyway!"

Foley: The Rockets got the ball back!

    Peterson: We got it anyway!

    Foley: It's over! It's over! It's over!

Peterson (more or less simultaneously): Take it in! Take it in! Take it in! Take it in! This ballgame is over!

    Foley: The Rockets are up!

    Peterson: Yes! Yes! Yes!

    Foley: Oh, my goodness gracious!

Peterson: How sweet it is! The Rockets win it, and, boy, that is one of the dirtiest plays I've ever seen!

    Foley: Somebody fell asleep!

Peterson: What in the world is the matter with those people? Holy cow!

Foley: They let eight seconds go by!

    Peterson: Eight seconds!

Foley: And the clock never started!

Peterson: Oh, man, you talk about a home-court advantage! Whew!
