http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns//articles/0624suns0625.html Phoenix Passed Up Deal For McGrady In 2004? 25th June, 2007 - 4:13 am Arizona Republic - In 2004, Phoenix traded the No. 7 pick to Chicago for the pick that became Jackson Vroman, a future first-round pick that became the one that went to New York (Nate Robinson) and $3 million to replace a check cut to Charlotte to take Jahidi White. The Suns had just balked at giving Marion, Joe Johnson and the No. 7 pick to Orlando for Tracy McGrady and wanted to clear space for a free-agency push when Kobe Bryant and Nash were on the market. The Suns said the money enabled them to sign Quentin Richardson and Steve Nash but Phoenix had assumed the player it wanted, Andre Iguodala, would not be available at No. 7. Phoenix drafted Luol Deng on behalf of Chicago but Iguodala was still on the board.
I recall the Suns -Jerry Colangelo commenting that the Rockets Steve Patterson shopped Hakeem Olajuwon in late 1991-but he felt we wanted too much for him. The Colangelo's are very sophisticated traders IMHO. Brian Colangelo is impressive- somebody posted a video from a past draft where he was calling other GM's to see if they were doing anything with their picks. He was trying to get a player or move up in the draft- very interesting.
The posted article implies that the deal may have hurt their ability to get Nash. I'm not sure about the exact cap figures at the time. Additionally, Nash/TMac/Amare does NOT equal championship automagically. Marion fits that team much better and is an incredible defensive player on a team lacking defense.. and yet they still didn't go all the way.
Wow. Who declined that deal? Pheonix or Orlando. Must have been Pheonix. Couldnt imagine that Orlando would take Francis, Mobley n Cato over Marion, Johnson and a lottery. Even if Johnson wasnt waht he is now
I just can't see Tracy in teams like Phoenix, San Antonio or Dallas. It would be very funny Can someone make a photo of Tracy in Suns jersey? (cause I can't use Photoshop well)
i don't think nash will be really that good w/ tmac. he's not that good if he has 1-on-1 players on his team. see how nash played w/ dirk and finley in dallas. he was good, not great. the team now depends more on nash. tmac doesn't need anyone to create for him. so i dont think it would be as good a fit. notice how phoenix is not jumping into the kobe bryant trade talks either. however, KG fits better b/c KG does not need the ball all that much and he fills a need for their rebounding and defensive needs.
and it was the suns who balked at the deal. they only wanted to give up 2 of the 3: either johnson/marion, but not the pick. or marion/pick, but not johnson and so on.
What if Dallas had re-signed Nash? What if Houston had traded Ralph for to Portland for the #2 pick in the 1984 draft + Drexler?
this was commonly reported on 610 at the time, it was us or phoenix for Mcgrady and Phoenix backed out...
You guys have to remember, the Gm of the magic at that time was a snake. He made a deal for Tmac with CD, then turned around and started trying to make side deals for Tmac behind CD's back. He was asking for far too much from every team interested, and some he didn't talk to at all.
And they were probably correct, definetly correct in not including a #7 pick that would fetch Deng or Igudala. That would have been 3 all-stars or bordeline future all-stars for a superstar with some injury concerns--no way. Phx did the right move on this in saving their money for Nash rather than do the Tmac trade. Of course they should have just selected Deng/Igudala to play the 3 instead of the cost cutting move to allow them to sign Q.
I'm tucson so i can give you the low down, they are actually licking themselves for some strange reason. other than that they are also looking to move the bloated contract that is merion. he sucks balls so hard, and he makes more than tmac right now, why would anyone want his contract, why would anyone sign him? he gets a scratch and expects a flagrant foul. suns suck balls, rockets all the way.
Marion, JJ, #7 is a whole lot more than Francis, Mobley, and Cato. We got lucky that Phoenix backed out
