I would also like to see Yao dominate in the paint more. However, it is undeniable that his precision and finesse gives him a shooter's touch that is unlike most other big men in the game. Last season it seemed like we were trying to make Yao post up to score all of his points, and even though it wasn't entirely unsuccessful, Yao didn't always look comfortable. I think we should give him looks at jumpers too because he can knock them down with great consistancy, and he is so tall that it is hard for another player to contest his shot. If the ball goes in the basket, it doesn't really matter if Yao shot it from 5 ft away or 18 ft.

Hey Gundy lover what we are saying is he needs to do this kind of thing more often he can be an impossible to stop as a 15 foot shooter.

I want Yao to do whats best in each situation. If he has a good look from 15 ft, i think he should take it. If he has good position down low and can get the dunk, i think he should take it. He has many talents, he can score in other ways besides dunking. Shaq scores all his points 5 ft from the basket because he cant shoot. Tim duncan takes 15 ft shots and makes them in addition to playing strong in the paint. Lets play to Yao's strengths, instead of trying to make him into a Shaq type center.

yaos strength is 5 feet and in...and duncan is an over rated jump shooter as jvg said on the telecast so many times

The jumpers aren't important. What's important is the section of the video where you see Yao's passing.

Notice his position. A couple of times he's in the low post. (once passing to a cutting Jon Barry and the other being a standard kickout)

But there are some plays where he's in the high post and he feeds the ball to cutters who jump into the middle of the paint. The idea of high post action is to clear the paint up for cutters that are going to the basket. Also, Yao can then dart passes their way.

Also, a few times he was at the free throw line and higher. That's another Adelman staple when he was in Sacramento. (especially for Brad Miller who doesn't know how to play on the post) Miller would hang out there and fire the ball at guys from that angle and it generally worked well. Yao could theoretically do the same on a small set of plays.

Look Yao will first and foremost be a dominant low post scorer but we've all been crying for some variation to throw defenses off so they can't just use Phoenix's strategy and swarm him with every defender on every play. Pulling him out to the high post punishes teams for swarming because invariably a man will cut under the basket and Yao can dump it in for the layup. If he stays on the low post, all the defenders and Yao crowd the paint and his only move is a kickout for a 3 which is hit or miss depending on how well players are shooting.

The Rockets could use a set of motion offense plays to keep defenses off kilter. Hopefully that happens.

Yao will be something to behold this season. I am sure he will do more things that he stop doing because of the offensive shemes JVG had for Yao, more Ewing like. I see Yao doing more of a mixture of Dream and Webber during this coming season. I can't wait to get this thing going again.

Just because JVG say duncan is overrated jumpshooter doesnt make it fact, and this logic applies to your assessment of Yao's strengths as well. The fact is, Yao is probably the most accuarate mid-range jump shooter out of any big man in the league. if you want to completely ignore this strength, then Yao will never realize his full potential. I agree he needs to be a dominant force in the paint, but he is a very good shooter and can shoot over anyone. Yao's shot is so precise, this is the quality that CD says will make him "the first big man to shoot 90% from the free throw line"

Anyone else notice that a disproportionate amount of Yao's highlights are in the Championship-era uniforms?

Look at 00:31, that's the creativity Yao showed in his rookie year and has been less and less.

Yeah but his sample size is so small because he never shoots jumpers. You can't make any statistical judgements with such a small sample size.

The key is getting healthy, not get injuried. His form before he got injuried last year was excellent. He was very quick. After the injury, especially during the playoffs, he was very slow, can't spin, can't do much.

agreed the injury hurt him more than he let on. the statistical sample is from all 5 years in the nba and is still below average for mid range j's. they must be wanting to put him up in the high post to post wells and mcgrady
