Afghan Taleban 'targeting Kabul' Taleban are changing their focus to attack the Afghan capital Kabul, a spokesman for the group says. It's easy to understand how the Taleban could control the rural areas of Afghanistan, but it's an entirely different to imagine a Taleban being able to go after Kabul. Who the hell is providing the funds (and ultimately the arms and munitions) necessary to allow the Taleban to wage an offensive against the capital?
And you would be correct. Moreover, the Taliban can operate for 'cheap', and they have some experience in maintaining a persistent campaign against an overwhelmingly powerful force, and eventually outlasting it.
LOL! You sure it's not Saudi or Pakistan? What about global warming? I heard Iran is responsible for that as well (have you been to Tehran lately?). Somehow, everything will be traced back to the Iranians. Ironically, they were the ones who helped the coalition forces topple the Taliban regime.
It could also be Pakistan or the House of Saud, but the weapons we have intercepted are coming out of Iran.
Compared to what the Shiites do (removing eyes, using electric drills to drill holes in peoples knees and heads, dragging them behind cars) it really isn't.
Getting your head chopped off is worse than getting your toe chopped off, therefore getting your toe chopped off is good.
Never said anything about it being good. And they do worse than chop people's heads off. At least that would be relatively quick, rather than lasting hours or more. And waterboarding does not cause permanent physical injury like chopping off a toe. So your examples are not good.
Some more examples of Al Qaeda torture, include drilling hands and limb removal. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0524072torture1.html Not for those with weak stomachs.
I didn't read the story linked, but I heard the associated story on the BBC World Service. Essentially the Taliban is doing it 'on the cheap', Iraq-style. They aren't going to wage a campaign with artillery, tanks and air support. Rather they are going to 'attack' with IED's and suicide bombers and wage an attrition/infiltration 'campaign'. The Taliban guy interviewed came straight out and said the Westerners care when their soldiers die and we don't at all, which was kind of disturbing to me. I don't think this requires any sort of increase in funding. Everybody already has an AK or an RPG, and the chemicals required to mix basic explosives aren't particularly expensive. If you want to get a sense of the type of thing that I'm talking about, the following is a BBC documentary following the Royal Marines in Afghanistan. Of course it is from the British perspective but it is not the flag-waving type of thing you might expect. It does a good job of showing the kind of hit, run, and disappear type of war the Taliban has been fighting. I'm sure this is the kind of thing that will happen in Kabul. Sorry for so many embeds. The documentary is in 4 parts. It is also relatively long - in excess of half an hour all together, but you can catch what I'm trying to say by just watching the first video. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nTip_-qZ5Bk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nTip_-qZ5Bk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8hOaSHO3tiI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8hOaSHO3tiI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qQuiVjyDX3U"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qQuiVjyDX3U" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UQS8lnwLpPg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UQS8lnwLpPg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
