visually they are decent but they are also very generic in its actual gameplay.

I think WOW means games people are waiting for like MGS or FF or GT for PS3.
No one is going crazy about those games you mentioned. I'm not doubting that they are good, but show stoppers/system sellers? apparently not.

cause you don't know how old the used systems are. if they are the very first ones, they could be problematic. also the lasers maybe worn out.

i had a used ps2, it didnt like some discs with too many scratches. the newer ps2s played anything with scratches.

plus these are used. you dont know if the owner was some dude who got mad and threw his system across the room whem some 13 year kid beats him at madden.

    If you say so...

Oh, I agree (although MS and R:FoM definitely helped sell the PS3, especially in Europe). But as I said, those are pretty rare. The 360 has been out for almost 2 years, and I'm not even sure it really has such a title (maybe Gears, but even that's somewhat debatable).

PS3 hardware is still pretty new and maybe a little buggy (like all launch hardware), and there seems to be some serious issues with the 360's hardware that Microsoft seemingly hasn't been able to fix. It would be kind of risky to buy a used system in either case (the more use, more likelihood of it breaking), and it certainly wouldn't help if you bought a used system that was out of warranty or almost out of warranty.

FWIW, I don't know about used systems, but some new PS3s go for $450-$500 on eBay. I actually went ahead and ordered one this week since I figured that would be as low as any price cut Sony puts in this year.

Gears has sold millions of copies and is the #1 game on Xbox Live. The multiplayer doesn't get old, they keep releasing new maps for it. Its different too, its not the classic FPS. Its building a strong fanbase.

tell me why what you think they offered that was edgy, new...what was different? ..besides being pretty (and not even prettier than their competitors)?

Yep. To be honest, the fact that my PS2 recently died and I can't play God of War II (and a few other PS2 games) kind of pushed me to get one now rather than later. Outside of Resistance and MotorStorm, I'm not even really interested in any PS3 games released so far...enough to pay $50-$60 anyway (I'll probably check out Gripshift and Tekken on the PSN though). The Darkness and NGS are really tempting though.

The same could pretty much be said for Resistance AFAIK.

The games you listed are far bigger than either title though, which is why I said Gears was debatable.

Well, I certainly don't know of any game that plays quite like MotorStorm, which shouldn't be a surprise given the reliance on the insane amount of physics in the gameplay. I need to play Resistance to get the full experience, but I get the impression that it is another case of "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." No part of the game is downright spectacular or innovative (unless you consider 40 players online with several game modes innovative...guess the guns are innovative too, but I come to expect that from Insomniac), but the combination of it all seems to create for a great gameplay experience. It was certainly enough for most reviewers to call it the PS3's first killer app.

What are some examples of games that you think wow people? Not that this really matters since we are basically just discussing things that are really subjective.

Thanks. I wasn't planning on getting a PS3 so soon, so I'm not really ready for online play or anything like that (no broadband). I can give away my PSN name whenever I create it, but I won't be playing anything online until around August or September at the earliest (when I move back to Austin).

Speaking of folding, I guess this should help me out in the rankings. I've been messing around with Vista these last few weeks, and I haven't had a chance to re-install Folding@Home on my PC yet (not even sure it works on Vista).

you got to be kidding? GOW sold millions more than Resistance.

The PS3 is behind in sales as the expensive box that has the most powerful hardware but no blockbuster games. The Wii has "The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess," the 360 has "Gears of War." The PS3 won't be getting a comparatively big title until "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" is released in March 2008 at the latest.

here's an article from last year:
    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6162230.html
This week, Gears made news due to its popularity as well. Within hours of the shooter topping Halo 2 as the most-played game on Xbox Live, Microsoft announced that the game has sold more than 1 million units worldwide. The rapid pace at which Gears hit the milestone, just two weeks after its release, makes it the fastest-selling Xbox 360 game to date, besting such heavyweights as Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Call of Duty 2.

I think you may have ignored the sucess of GOW. you can debate if Resistance is a better game, but GOW clearly has sold more and has more players online. not even close.

Here's an updated sales for GOW. there is no debate vs Resistance for sales/players.
    http://gearsofwar.com/News/three_million.htm

REDMOND, Wash.—Jan. 19, 2007—Gears of War has gone triple platinum, reaching the 3 million-units-sold milestone in just 10 weeks on store shelves, ending 2006 as the top-selling game among all platforms during the month of December.

Expanding upon its reign as the fastest-selling title of 2006 and the fastest-selling original exclusive Xbox® game of all time, Gears of War has captivated gamers across the globe with its action-packed single-player campaign, thrilling online modes, and recently released multiplayer maps, Raven Down and Old Bones. Since the downloadable content’s release via Xbox LIVE® Marketplace less than two weeks ago, the new maps have garnered an astounding 750,000 downloads. There have been more than 1.5 million total downloads of all Gears of War content currently available via Marketplace, including the maps, themes, and video walkthrough, by gamers who can’t get enough of Delta Squad and the Locust Horde.

"Like blockbuster titles from Microsoft's Halo® franchise and the Grand Theft Auto and Zelda franchises, Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next generation," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft Corp.

Gears of War continues to wow consumers and critics alike, garnering more than 20 nominations for game of the year. The game is a truly global phenomenon: prestigious Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu recently gave Gears of War the coveted Platinum award; it joins Blue Dragon™ as the second Microsoft Game Studios title in the past two months to receive this high honor.

Not just a gaming sensation, the acclaimed "Gears of War: Mad World" cinematic trailer was featured in Advertising Age’s Book of Tens as one of the top creative concepts of 2006. With more than 2.4 million views of the trailer online, the campaign has inspired not only tremendous sales, but also a number of hilarious parody videos currently circulating around the Internet.

I wasn't comparing Gears and Resistance in sales (certainly would be stupid to do that just given the differences in install base...every PS3 owner could buy Resistance, and it would still be behind Gears AFAIK). I was just saying that Resistance had sold millions as well (or close to it....can't recall exactly, but it should be close to 1.5M-2M given European sales IIRC), and that the rest applied to it as well (#1 PS3 online title, new maps, gameplay doesn't get old, good start to new franchise, etc.).

    i know what you mean.

Depends if you are referring to the new consoles or not. My experience with 360 and ps3 are minimal. Although, some of the games that wowed me werent necessarily big sellers...like eternal darkness sanity's requiem (the insane meter was brilliant) , killer 7 (fantastic and twisted story).

Some of the more popular ones...perfect dark (multiplayer heaven), mario 64, i've played limited on Gears of War but i liked the tweaking they did with the movements and taking cover and such. i think Gran Turismo took racing games to another level of depth (i never thought i could sit there and do 30 laps on a racing game and still have fun). those are just off the top of my head.

Dont get me wrong, i'd probably like playing resistance, i like FPS games (although not as much as i use to b/c they are played out a little) but that game just didnt seem to offer anything particularly exciting, new, or whatever you want to call "it", other than the fact that it has nice graphics. Then again, im basing that opinion without having gotten my hands on it...just reading reviews, so maybe im missing something.

    first things first..

    you must have an HDTV!!!
having a $400-$600 system without a HDTV will qualify you as a 'cheapskate'!

Why is that? Don't have one yet but why should I get one in order to purchase one of these systems?

    ABSOLUTELY.
the whole point of PS3 and X360 is HD gaming (high resolution)
PS3 is ESPECIALLY pointing this out with its blu-ray abilities.

all the games are in 720p or higher.

Its not that expensive, I can recommend you some TVs, give me your price range. plus you can watch sports/movies in HiDef.
