Justin Reed is really not that bad of a throw in for us. I think he has a good shot of making the team, and I think he has a better shot of being in the league 3 years from now than Juwon Howard has. He's only 25 years old, was a fairly high second round draft pick coming out of college, and had some good games towards the end of the year against some decent competition. (19 points in 26 minutes against Denver and 17 in 23 against Dallas). He's got size (6'8" 240) and he's also a good free throw shooter. All in all, not bad at all...
Huh...my thread got deleted. Ah well. Here we go, a quick description of what Reed brings to the table, grace a la RealGM Timberwolves forum. A good steal for the Rockets imo.
I think the inclusion of Reed means that the Rockets have more leeway to make 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 trades. Reed is lowcost and a body.
I did quick web search on him and most websites had him listed as a SF but 82games had jim playing more minutes at PF in each season.
In a scenario like this, is it possible to turn around and trade either of these two players. So say you run another trade and Reed's salary makes it a good trade money wise... do they have to wait a certain amount of time to move him?
moneyball morey at it again. in all honesty I think this is just that. reed doesn't really effect the possibilty of resigning hayes as much as he just adds a little extra insurance for the long haul of the season.
LOL! In Febraury, the T-Wolves tried to throw in Eddie Griffin. Now, the T-Wolves throw in Justin Reed. I really doubt it is the case the Rockets asked for Justin Reed instead of T-Wolves try to get rid of a seldom use bench warmer.
The Rockets get some size and defense behind Battier. As the roster currently stands: Alston, James, Spanoulis McGrady, Head, Snyder Battier, Reed, * * , * , Novak Yao, * , * Sura, waivable for 1M Lucas, waivable for 500k I think the key to Hayes staying is if he agrees to a contract for 1.5M or less. My hunch is Snyder is the one who's become more expendable.
i don't think this has an affect on chuck hayes' situation. reed is more of a SF than a PF, though he can play both. he played most of his minutes in mini as a PF because they are stacked on the perimeter. if anything, i think this makes snyder (our incumbent athletic wing) expendable. interesting note: james makes billy expendible. reed makes snyder expendible. sura and the #26 pick are expendible... and guess who wants that package?
For those of you who are knocking Justin Reed.... He was drafted ahead of a certain Greek superstar on our current roster. And it's not Jake.
In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances: For two months after receiving the player in trade or claiming him off waivers, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap. So in two months we could package him in a deal with his reasonable 1.4M contract. He is either good filler in a trade (for someone like Artest or SnT Rashard) or a reason that we can now use another player as filler in such a trade. Getting athletic big man bodies with reasonable contracts is always a plus.
I assume we got him for additional trade filler ... That's a valuable asset this summer, especially when you are only a million or two away from matching salaries. It might also mean theres another trade within 48 hours ... (hopefully)
