From a chat with Oregonian Beat Writer Jason Quick

Q: Are you hearing anything about Martell? Will he be with the team next year?

A: I'm torn on that. I haven't heard him in as many rumors as Jarrett. I know Houston has brought his name up. I think they will look to move Shane Battier. At one point they were discussing a Jarrett Jack-Travis Outlaw deal. They were debating and considering Travis and Jarrett for Shane Battier. But they didn't feel Travis was good enough. Then they talked about Jarrett and Martell but the concern was they didn't think they were getting enough of an upgrade at point guard in Jarrett. They wanted to compete with San Antonio and Utah and they didn't feel Jarrett could put the clamps down on Tony Parker or Deron Williams. Those trade talks passed by quickly but those players were brought up by the Rockets.

Rumors are rumors, but where there's smoke there's fire and I think there is enough smoke to conclude that:

    1) The Rockets are looking for a PG upgrade (not just a Rafer backup).
    2) The Rockets are shopping Battier.

I don't see Jack as the answer for the Rockets. Outlaw would be interestin in a motion offense as he can get to the rack with autority, but needs work on his J. He's still so young, though (20 or 21).

If only we could have got the #26 pick and Kyle Lowry from Memphis last year... nice one CD. But it's nice to see us finally looking at legit PG's and some athletic young guys (Outlaw also has an underrated mid-range game).

Shane Battier would be a brilliant pickup for the Trailblazers and a hurtful loss for the Rockets.
Shane's defense on the other teams best player, each game, is worth the price of admission. I watched an absolute master of the overlooked half of the game for 82 games and know I was seeing an Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird, or Michael Jordan level performance, but on the defensive end. Shane is a great defensive player, a great team player, and a good shooter. The summer talk about moving him out for pretty, porous posers pretending to be players, is preposterous.
Each game at the Toy Center is filled with bad loud music, bouncing boobs,
useless smoke , pretentious PA announcers treating each first quarter in January like the seventh game of the finals. Each basket is hyped and over amplified to try and give significance to routine play to and convince high dollar seats that they are seeing something special. Tracy puts in a three quarter speed layup against Memphis and its onTTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
    MMMMMMMMMMMMCCCCCCCCCGGGGGGGRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDD
    YYYYYYY, cue the apocalypse music.

And all the while, Strataverious is quietly playing, the Bill Russell of
small forwards has held another All Star to 6 points, the King has his clothes
on and is performing his feats of athletic greatness as if Frodo's invisibility cloak is around his shoulders.

The Rockets have three strong pieces for a ( hopefully ) championship run.
Let's hope Tracy has his back behind him and gets stronger and madder
all summer. Lets hope Yao is 100% healthy and again improves noticeably over the summer. AND lets hope Shane Battier stays a Rocket and becomes an offensive force with Coach Adleman.

That was the biggest joke about that trade last year. I have no idea why we didn't get Memphis' pick last year.

I personally think Morey is going to get something big for Battier and someone else plus the pick! There is no way that such a talent can't bring us less than a solid offensive player..

Battier is loved for doing what the coach asks of him and for what he is off the court, I could bet he would be in a great deal for us this summer...

Obviously the Rockets are exploring a lot of options for moves. The Battier moves mentioned above are interesting, and perhaps look much better if the Artest for scrubs deal coincided with it. who knows.

Like Clutch said, where there is smoke there is fire. It's obvious the Rockets know they need a talent upgrade around Tmac/Yao. And they know that Battier is their best trade chip (along with Sura's expiring and their 1st round pick).

If the Rockets can make a trade before or at draft time, then that would allow them the ability to use the MLE to "fill holes" that the trades might have created to balance out the roster. I am sure that's their plan.

Jrazz, your post is hilarious. Toy center is just like every other arena though.

But at least our whole crowd doesn't yell "ROCK-ETS BAS-KET-BALL" after every turnover like toddlers on a playground. Leave that to the people that throw drinks at players, tear NAB jerseys into pieces in seconds, and riot like royalty.

But seriously I agree about how Battier is not part of the 'main tent show' and flashiness, but I do believe that we can get some pretty good value for him that may not last much longer.

That makes it what, three or four different scenarios where Battier is involved in a trade?

Looks like Battier will end up being a "one-year rental" who will almost definitely not be here next season...

Maybe, but I'm not sure a lot of Portland fans feel assured of that anymore. I know he's still 20, but for a guy who is supposed to be a great shooter, you would think he would have hit 40% from the field by now. I'm sure he'll get better, but star I'm not so sure.

No kidding. Battier has Morey's fingerprints all over him-- one of those underrated stat guys.

Why would they be eager to be rid of him. Oh, he's about our only tradeable asset not named Tracy or Yao...

Morey is just a smart guy in general. Whether that translates into being a great GM or not I don't know, but I doubt he insists on keeping Battier because of his efficiency and +/- if he realizes he's not the ideal fit for the new coach and style.
