US special unit 'stands by to steal atomic warheads'
By Ben Fenton
(Filed: 29/10/2001)

AN elite American military unit is preparing for possible incursion into Pakistan in order to steal its nuclear weapons arsenal, it is reported today.

The special forces unit is training with Israel's most trusted anti-terrorist unit, and would be called into action in the event that Gen Pervaiz Musharraf lost power in Pakistan, the New Yorker magazine said.

The CIA believes that Pakistani army officers sympathetic to the Taliban could pose a threat to Gen Musharraf, and that some of the country's estimated 24 nuclear warheads could be stolen by renegades within Pakistan's intelligence service, the ISI.

Wow. If we get all of them that would be great. I don't get why the media is letting this be known, because Pakistan will definetley be on high alert. This could be either good or bad.

If this is true?... then it's a shame something like this would be leaked.
I wouldnt think you could just go in and take something like this without risk of detonation.

Well, 24 warheads seems like a lot. I wish them luck. Maybe in a fight they could 'accidentally' be triggered and take out the entire middle East. We could use a parking lot.

They might be leaking this in order to deter a revolt in Pakistan.

Who knows what they would with those nukes...

I think it is a bad idea to leak info period. I would rather be told all the details after we win the war, without risking any lifes.

This is one of those leaks that someone could be tried and executed for...

Musharaf and the ISI created the Taliban. Musharaf now realizes that unless he cooperates with us he will fall. If the war doesn't end quickly he will fall as well. If he falls then a coalition of religious leaders (mullahs) and army officers will replace him, and we will effectively be at war with Pakistan (as they are the ones supporting the Taliban and calling for jihad). They cannot be allowed to have nukes under those circumstances.

But whoever leaked this should be taken out and shot. This is one of those things the public does not have a right to know about until after the fact.

Musharaf and the ISI created the Taliban.

I don't know my Afghan/Pakistan history too well. What was Musharaf's role in the creation of the Taliban? Musharaf came to power in a coup in late 1999, while I thought the Taliban was around long before this. ?

OK... so say some faction takes over Pakistan, they gain control of the nukes, we try to go and "steal" them, what if they just launch the suckers? I mean... what if the U.S. is a target? Could this escalate to a nuclear war? This is nutz!

I don't think they (the warheads) have long range capabilities.

They most likely would launch towards India or try to take out US battelships/aircraft carriers in the area.

just my opinion

Stupid comment deleted!

Pakistani missiles can only go as far as New Delhi I think. Whoever did leak should be shot. I mean what kind of a retarted person would leak this kind of high level info?!?!

PhiSlammaJamma, you do know there are innocent kids and woman in the Middle East right? I hope you were being sarcastic by wanting to take out the entire ME? I really didnt expect you to say something like that

The last I heard, they don't have the technology to launch the things halfway around the world. They could make it to India, though...

The Pakistanis don't have ICBMs, they have IRBMs. The difference is that one can reach the US, and the other can't. Their missiles were designed to reach Bombay, not Washington...

But they could conceivably try to sneak one in across the border in a pickup truck. If you can sneak a truckload of illegal aliens through, then you can sneak a nuke through.

Musharaf was a colonel in the ISI (their military intelligence branch) when he came up with the idea of creating the Taliban. The purpose was twofold: 1) to basically take over Afghanistan (it's been called "strategic depth"), and 2) to get a supply of non-Pakistani terrorists to use in Kashmir. The Taliban and Al Qaeda are actually quite active there, and when they kill someone the Pakistanis can say "Hey, they're not our guys"...

It is not out of the question that Pakistani nukes could end up in the hands of the Taliban / Al Qaeda. At the very, very least the Pakistanis have close ties to the Taliban. It is likely that they actually control it.

Oh yeah, it's going to be easier to steal them now! Between this, and trying to scare the public into believing fullscale biological and chemical warfare is on it's way and trying hard to get the public to panic about Anthrax, the media is practically useless. The President told these idiots not to report these things because it could put lives in danger. Glad to see there is a segment of the media who thinks it's ok to risk thousands, maybe millions of lives to get a "good scoop".

Interesting -- I didn't know about that connection.

Before criticizing our media here, keep in mind this was the UK media -- not US -- and there was someone on our side who obviously didn't value the information that much either.

No bad there Rockets03. 'Simpsons reference' does not excuse inhumane or inappropriate comments.
