To reveal truths or contain wisdom something does not need to be 100% true. (The following is based on a somewhat distant memory. Please excuse me if the details are not 100% correct.) Plato's Apology (I think) deals extensively with the trial of Socrates. But it is generally accepted that Plato did not transcribe the words of that trial. Essentially he made up the words of Socrates after the fact. One can not say that because they aren't an exact transcription and 100% true to the words of Socrates the words don't hold anything useful or wise. To me, people who argue about the Seven Days are like the legalist in the New Testament who seek to trip up Jesus into blaspheming. They are really missing the point in a way that makes them almost tragic. Technically those would be galactic years, not days.
And thus God created Utah, and he saw that it was a big piece of crap, but said, aw **** it and moved on.
conservatives will be against this because it takes away one of their arguing points against the progressives.
Cloning? Stem cell research does revolve around the muddled thinking of social conservatives. Social conservatives are the political force behind the current legal limitations in stem research funding. I suspect that social conservatives feel that messing around with stem cells intrudes into an area where G-d has sole purview. Of course, social conservatives feel no such restriction when assisting G-d in his judgment responsibilities.
I hope to God this works out like it says, that way we can stop bickering and save some people's lives.
This might be heresy here in Clutchfans but personally I like Utah. Its got some great scenary and some of the best skiing in the world not at the crazy inflated Colorado rates. Other than the Jazz, their fans, and Mormon missionaries knocking at my door I got no problem with Utah.
I concur. Though I have a little bit more of a problem with the religious fanatics there than you do. They have some good beers in Utah, also.
There's a lot of assumptions being thrown out there about what the conservatives (the Other) would think. Why don't you ask one? There are conservatives who post on these boards. I don't think I've seen a post in this thread yet arguing that stem cell research without aborted embryos is still bad. At least turn to the world wide web. Certainly, there is a wingnut out there somewhere who has already blogged about it. The least you could do is find the crank and link to him and then pretend that guy represents millions of Christians and conservatives all over the country, instead of referring to nothing at all but your own prejudices.
just my 2 cents, i dont mind a ban of govt funding for stem cell at this time. People have lots of hopes, and thats great, but its still very early and i think the private sector will do fine on its own to further gain information and be able to understand more about it....at least at this point. I tend to think that for such a complex, both scientifically and ethically, medical situation, some caution should be taken and more should be learned.
Research scientists strongly do not agree with your opinion and will openly mock you as a foolish person behind your back. I hope you can live with this mockery.
well im going to mock you now because i have no idea what you are specifying. So if you just want to make a smart ass comment, so be it. but if you actually want to talk about it, then be clear. i will mock research scientists for relying on the govt to do something efficient and effective.
So you would just rather the NIH not spend $$$s on decease research and leave it to the private sector?
i thought i said what i would do...i dont think that because promise is shown you start throwing money at it, at least not yet. I dont know where they are at with stem cell research, but i know its still early, right? there is still internal debate about which avenue is the best, right? and i may be wrong, but wasnt the ban on funding for embryonic stemcells? i see the reasoning for going into the embryonic side of things cautiously. basic point is, Just because the govt throws money at something it doesnt solve the problems or answer questions. if a scientist mocks that then he needs to step away from the chemicals.
They have high hopes for therapeutic cloning in this line of research. California and other states with similar embryonic stem cell measures have had to build research facilities from the ground up because it's illegal to research ESC in any government funded building, which is almost all of the existing public research buildings. The government has always had some role in funding scientific research, public or private. There's been a lot of redundancy and waste in time and money since Bush decided to fully enforce the Dickey Amendment.
