my current laptop is on its last legs and i need a new one. i only use it for basic word processing and web browsing so no high end spec requirements. i could go out and buy one of those $400 peices of sh*t you can get deals on sometime, but the only problem is that i am incredibly anal about screen resolution and need something with a screen that goes to 1680 X 1050... so any suggestions? no speed or memory requirements.
I receive the following offer from Panasonic recently, Panasonic Tough Book Trial I never own a Panasonic notebook before but their models have often been the top 3 of my preference list due to its long battery life and light weight design. See if you are qualified for their Trial Programme. Then you can decide if it suits you after the 30-day trial. Good Luck!
Call HP's refurb line and ask for the latest list. I have ordered 3 laptops and they all look brand new with the same warranty. Great prices. Compare for yourself. Even better they were business grade, so they were very stable and didn't have a mess of unnecessary junk on them. 1-888-385-5408
I have purchased a nc6220, nx6110, and tc42xx (tablet). The the nx was under a thousand. The tc and nc was just above a thousand. At has been 1.5 years since I bought the last one, but I have referred many to this number and everyone is impressed. HP's business and SMB laptops are very good IMO. Call the number and have them send the latest pricelist and then shop around. At least you know that the price is worth the laptop. Then shop around. Good luck
Just a word of warning about getting a low spec laptop. I thought the same as you - just needed a cheap laptop for basic web surfing etc, so I got an Acer with 512M of Ram, and Celeron-M 1.8. It also ame with Vista basic. It was so slow it was unbearable. ould literally take ovet ten minutes to boot up and be ready to use. Even just switching between applications had uncomfortable delays. I'm not sure if it was the low power processor, the resource hogging of Vista, the preloaded Acer "extras" or a combination of all three, but I took that piece of junk straight back to the shop.
Just got a IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad z61t. It was about 1050 after tax and all that. So far, I love it. It's durable and it's pretty small (almost the same size as a 13" macbook). Of course, the resolution size isn't what you're gonna be thrilled about (it's 1280x800) But be forewarned: Took me a month to get mine built and shipped. If you can stand the wait, I highly recommend it.
*what is everyone's opinion of the macbook. *if i understand correctly, wxga means it can go to 1280X800. what do i need to be looking for to find the smaller resolutions (1600X1200ish). thanks for all the help.
I've heard nightmares about Vista. Every single feedback I got is people telling me to "stick with XP". Is it really that bad? Some complained of 'incompatibility' issues with Vista as well. On a side note, anyone here has component-level knowledge of computers whereas you can fix components instead of replacing the entire part? If so, e-mail me through the board.
Honest to god advice? Get a HP refurb like Wilks recommends there with the below min specs: Entry-level Dual-Core processor 1 GB RAM Entry-level graphics card with "dedicated video memory" That's it. As long as you have these things, you can't really go wrong with any computer maker these days. Just look for the best deal. HP outlet is a great place to start. Lenovo and Dell and Acer make POS's... Would strongly advise against going with them...
