Is Alonzo Mourning eligible for this award?

The Catomic Bomb will come out and show that he is the Nightmare, not the Hallucination!!! :D

*sigh* I can dream, can't I? I think he has a good shot considering how low he is coming from.

    1 Derrick Coleman
    2 Glen Rice
    3 Rod Strickland
    4 Mitch Richmond
    5 Steve Smith

Can Grant Hill be nominated, if so, he wins by a landslide. No question.

Yeah---I thought of Derek Coleman too. Actually, I agree with everyone on your list but Rice and Smith. Don't laugh---but Samaki Walker (isn't he starting next to Shaq?) might be in the running too.

Hill would not be fit for MIP , maybe Comeback player of the year . If Cato steps his lazy ass up and does anything to contribute I will be shocked beyond belief and worship him .

Did he become lazy after the contract---or was he lazy all the while and paid for his potential?

Best case take - Cato was lazy the first year and injured the second. (Slow recovery from high-ankle sprain). He is now healthy, confident, and wants to help the Rockets win.

Worst case take - Cato was lazy and tried to be on the DL as much as possible, was afraid of being the man, and was content with his guaranteed contract. Cato now sees that he has to start producing in order to maneuver for his next contract.

I'm hoping the first take is closer to the truth.

Don't they have separate awards for players like Mourning, Coleman, and Hill?

Doesn't the NBA have comeback player of the year?

I don't think that would be the same as most improved player of the year.

none of these people mentioned could win most improved because they are already established bball players who have in fact become worse. The MIP tends to go to a player that has come out of obscurity. For instance, if Kenny Thomas were to have a solid year, he could be a candidate. Eddie Robinson in Chicago could be a candidate.

We don't know...Since he was pretty much a no-name in the land of obscurity(Portland).

The Rockets paid him on the basis of an outstanding preseason, all-star caliber, and their belief that it would carry into the regular season and regular seasons to come.

    Danny Fortson

Even though he's in the same category of players coming off major injuries as Hill and Mourning, this year will provide Fortson the opportunity to get the award he was destined to win last year before going down six games into the season. The man went from getting scraps in Boston to averaging 16 ppg and 16 rpg (!!!!!!!) to start last season. While he wouldn't have kept that pace up, he's a strong candidate to lead the league in rebounding this season.
