Okay guys. You may or may not be familiar with the ongoing saga that has been my job search in Austin. Well, I was in Austin on Tuesday and Wednesday with a couple of interviews, and about half an hour ago I got an official offer from one of them. (through a recruiter) Thing is, I'm still waiting to hear back from the other company I interviewed with, and I know they are bringing in another candidate on Monday. I told the company with the offer that I'd need the weekend to think about it at least, but I can't get an answer from the other company until at least Tuesday. I'd assume if they want me they want me, but I kind of got some pressure from the recruiter to make a quick decision. My assumption is that the recruiter just wants to get paid, which is understandable, but what are the odds that I'd actually jeopardize my offer with the company if I wait until Tuesday to make a decision? All things being equal, the two jobs are a very, very close call in my opinion. It may just come down to who offers me more. I hate to make a quick decision now and have it bite me in the butt later. As always, thanks for the ear guys.
ask them for a specific date on when the offer expires. if they say monday, ask them to extend it to tuesday.
I don't have any input, but I was wondering how much recruiters get paid. Are they just paid a commission from the hiring company? Is it a flat fee or a percentage of annual salary? I know someone on the board was a head hunter, but can't remember who though. Just wondering..
Not shady at all. That's the right business decision. If anything he can use the 2nd offer to leverage against the 1st.
not shady at all. They will understand. Don't think for a second they won't do the same to you. Do not burn burn bridges though
The company that made you the offer shouldn't have a problem extending the offer an extra day or two. It is in everyone's best interest for you to be confident about your decision. Once you accept the offer, the company has to reject all the other applicants. This puts the company in a bad position if you decide to not take the job and it also hurts the other applicants because one of them could have filled the position. While this happens all the time, it is kind of sleazy and it does burn bridges.
Just because the 2nd company is interviewing another guy on Monday doesn't mean they'll have a decision on Tuesday. They could, but they might also take a week before making an offer to anyone. So what happens if you can stretch it to Tueday but the 2nd company isn't ready to decide? I agree with some of the previous posts. Accept the offer and back out if the 2nd offer warrants it. It's kind of a dick move but you don't have any loyalty to any company and it's the only way to ensure you end up in the position you want.
