BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- A Chinese couple beat their daughter to death a few days before her third birthday because she could not recognize one Chinese character, a newspaper said on Friday.

The father, identified only by the surname Zeng, and his wife, Zhang, were arrested in the central province of Henan on Wednesday after the attack on the girl who could not read the Chinese character "jiao", meaning "banana", the Beijing News said.

The child "with bruises all around the body" died in the hospital after being kicked and punched, the newspaper said.

Chinese parents traditionally have high expectations for their children at school. Earlier this month, a woman from southern China was detained on suspicion of killing her four-year-old daughter because she could not count.

I'm not surprised it was a daughter that was killed because one of the side affects of the one child policy is that female infants and children have been killed. Speculation on my part my guess is that the family wasn't happy to have a daughter to begin with.

    your speculation is...very speculative.

I've known many chinese boys beaten badly for bringing home bad grades.

EDIT: fact is, the obssession with having a son doesn't extend to the entire country. It's very strong in the coastal areas like Canton for whatever reason, but far less strong in other places, such as my province.

I'm not sure which province you come from but I hear its a big problem in rural inland provinces and less so in the coastal urbanized problems.

I'm from one of the poorest provinces in China where practically 97% of the land is mountains. We really don't care if it's a boy or girl as long as they do work in the fields. The wedding ceremony traditions dictate that the son's family must feel honored to bring a bride into their household. Considering that where I come from, a monthly salary of $50 USD is good, you'd think we would definetely fall into the stereotype that poor people only want sons.

Almost every cantonese parent I've met, on the other hand, just want sons. My wife's province (Fu Zhou) is EXTREMELY tilted towards sons.

No, my place is much more inland, closer to Sichuan.

I don't doubt there are millions of CHinese people who don't value a daughter as much as a son, but when there's 1.2 billion people, there will always be direlicts that wouldn't think twice about beating a 3 yr old to death because they're female.

I still think this had much more to do with grades and probably economic factors than gender.

^ That's a very likely possibility and can't say either way without more info. That said I don't think its totally groundless as China has had a huge problem with female infanticide and neglect of daughters. I'm not totally familiar with Henan province but I had heard this was a problem in the rural areas there too.

Grades might've played the major role but I still suspect that the child being a daughter they probably treated her harsher than they might've a son.

Since they are in the PRC they've already blown their chance to have another kid. For that matter they've probably blown their chance at the rest of their own lives.

We have people in America that stick babies in the microwave. They were crazy parents that used reading as an excuse to abuse a child. It has nothing to do with the value of education.

Seeing how they handle people like this in China, these two are going to be excuted for sure. Don't need to worry about fixing them.

I don't think they will be executed, believe it or not, more like 10-20 years behind the bar.

Last week I read an idiot putting his own baby into the microwave. Now we have these two idiots beating their own child to death because of a reading test. Really depressing. What's wrong with these people?
