I always find it laughable that people use Bonds being a jerk to the media as a reason why they don't like him. He may very well be the biggest douche in the world, but for my money, it's a positive if a sports figure is a jerk to the sports media (no offense The Cat). I wish Berkman would (figuratively) take a Louisville Slugger to the side of the head of any of the Chronicle "writers". That's a profession that seems to be full of complete douchebags.

What about how he treats fans and other players? If he tells fans to "**** off" when asking for an autograph then he is a pure jerk. Keeping memorabilia away from fans is also disrespect. He could be the bigger person. (no pun intended)

Cries of racism are lame around this board considering the popularity of people like TMac, Hakeem, Vince Young, etc. Bonds isn't unpopular because he is black. If it were Griffey or Frank Thomas breaking the record (which is already held by a black guy by the way) none of this would be happening. When ARod breaks the record, people won't hate him for being brown.

I don't know bb, that's the point, I really don't know if he's a jerk. probably is, but he's never been a jerk to me. I've never hated an athlete for being a jerk to the media. I don't care how they treat the media. fans either really, because I was never one to be an autograph seeker maybe.

Maybe you aren't an 10 year old kid who gets spit on by your idol.

So it's cool to be a jerk and disrespect your fans. That makes sense to me... I really find nothing to like about the guy. You can be the greatest ball player in the world but that doesn't mean **** if you are a crappy person.

Exactly. Bonds gets a lot of press for his a-holeness towards the media (for obvious reasons), but the guy is an a-hole towards everyone else, even his family (he cheated on his wife). I just don't think he has respect for anybody.

I've been to AT&T park dozens of times before games start. During batting practice etc. Bonds ALWAYS takes time to thank the fans and sign autographs.

Go to AT&T park early one day and say Hi to him instead of reading a book that was biased and out to get him.

I want Aaron to retain the title. If Bonds had any class at all he'd retire after 754. Bonds does not deserves the title - at all. I'd subtract 100 hrs off his total. Still a respectable number and among the top hr hitters ever, but the HR King? He doesn't even deserve an asterisk.

    And I don't see that as racist. Aaron I respect - Bonds I don't.

Well an argument can be made that Aaron is acting like a selfish child based on some of his quotes, although I'm assuming that he's sick of answering questions.

I've read that Bonds is actually a fun, easy-going guy around friends, but it's no question his sour relationship with the general public hasn't helped him throughout his career. His "pity-me" reality show last year didn't help that perception.

Barry Bonds is just a very selfish individual who isn't getting any friendlier (outside of SanFran).

It's really unfortunate that people are and will continue to HATE him because of his accomplishments (or some would call it "cheating") at a GAME.

This is a silly GAME. It's not life, but it is his career.

Barry Bonds doesn't give a **** if he gets into the HOF and he knows it's in jeopardy. To his "credit" he sees that his potential for cashing out is waning, so he better bank while he can.

And last I checked baseball (MLB) is healthier than it's ever been from a business standpoint. Barry Bonds is GREAT for baseball. Without Bonds that's one less star to market and sell tickets and increase TV exposure. Even with the allegations and the "black eye" of steroids, people are talking about baseball much more than they would if Bonds had retired sometime in the last couple of years.

Also, I should mention that my views on baseball have changed in the past year. I basically only see baseball as a business/industry rather than an entertainment experience to cherish.

I was working with the NBHOF last year as an intern and the experience was awful and saw first hand at what an extremely overrated destination and travesty it is. Great museum, but marketing themselves as a shrine to baseball was sickening.

And their "unofficial/unaffiliated" status with MLB...

(I did work with Idelson (guy mentioned in article) and he is one of the few "good" people there.)

In the case of Bonds, I actually hope he does not give them anything; I'd rather the potential 755/756 ball(s) be sold or even destroyed than have that place in Cooperstown make a cent for their own profit.
