"We're confident we can turn this around and start losing again," said Elton Brand. The Grizz have now also won three straight -- wins in Miami, Toronto and Boston (impressive). Othella went off for a career-high 27 points, hit a staggering 11-14 from the field and grabbed 12 boards tonight in Boston. 'Thella! [*] Maloney goes off for 16 in his first game and then Mack goes off for 15 (5-12 from long range) -- including a huge (defender in his face), off-balance three-pointer with about 10+ seconds to go to force OT (where the Warriors eventually lost). So wild seeing Mack backpeddle up court after that shot with arms in the air celebrating and the Warriors fans screaming for him. [*] Bryce Drew is 4th in the league in three-point percentage at just under 45%. Not too bad. [This message has been edited by Clutch (edited January 10, 2000).]
"Games Back" column--you gotta love it. I don't give a rat's rear. I'd rather see the Rocket's win than lose, but I'd rather see them lose than not see them at all. If we're lottery bound, so be it--I'm still gonna enjoy the ride.
Pole -- I hear ya... more intended to be a gag, though I must admit I want a good pick. Funny too how 3 of the 4 teams behind (or ahead) of us have ex-Rockets on their teams that we let go this season. Dickerson & Othella (Grizzlies), Mack (Warriors) and Maloney (Bulls). Knowing Jerry Krause he'll deal Toni Kukoc ASAP for picks or a free agent that will free potential cap room this summer ... that's a guy I wouldn't put past tanking it.
OMG!!!! Van got 10 wins!!!! Now we seriously have a realistic chance at getting 3 seed! Now the trick is to lose to dallas with the excuse that Francis is injured so they jump ahead of us in the standings. That way we can get 5 seed PS-Houston we have a problem...Hakeem is coming back.
i've got an idea to help our standings (a sure 2 seed) - bring DIT back!!! the rest of the team will be so bored out of their asses, they won't play defense. oops, we'll lose all of our young players also (francis, etc.) to the literalists - sarcasm (above, not below) tank tank tank............ tank-n ru-dy tank tank tank............ tank-n ru-dy [This message has been edited by Achebe (edited January 11, 2000).]
For those of you who don't think wins make a difference, check out what would happen if season ended today. (First 7 seeds, others don't usually make it into lottery unlike the lucky hornets) Bulls = 250 balls Warriors = 200 balls Mavericks = 157 balls *1 Grizzlies = 120 balls Clippers = 89 balls *2 Rockets = 64 balls Wizards = 37 balls *1 Mavericks win in tie-breaker against Grizzlies. *2 Clippers win tie-breaker with us NOW YOU TELL ME, HOW IMPORTANT ARE THE WINS AND TIE BREAKERS? OUR LOTTERY CHANCES SUCK AS OF NOW. [This message has been edited by rocketsfan34 (edited January 11, 2000).]
ha-ha-ha... I know you guys are just doing this for "fun", but its way too early(and ridiculous) to be talking about the draft, let alone lottery. ------------------ I follow the NBA, but I am a ROCKETS FAN!!
rf34: remind me what the rules are. I thought that the lowest 14 got lottery balls. it seems like otherwise, teams would throw games at the end of the season; crucial games that would affect outcomes of playoff berths.
Just to fan the flames a little, Rodman might be able to energize Dallas. Orlando, I believe, has Golden State's pick so there's no reason for them to quit. Vancouver is 6-6 in last 12 games so they've turned it around. Washington is the team that "scares" me. They're coming apart completely.
Yes, But after tonight's inevitable loss to the Kings we will be in 3rd place. Glad to see you put this up clutch. I mentioned it earlier in a thread about the playoffs. We are actually closer to the worst record then the 8th seed. You know, this begs the question. If Rudy where really trying to win this year, then why did he not sign Sam Mack? DaDakota
Clutch, With Hakeem coming back we run a serious risk of falling way behind in this race, especially if he is looking as good as the Chronicle article says. This raises an interesting question on this board. How will the lottery devotees react if Dream starts to dominate and the Rocks start winning? Will he be in danger? Will those desiring to tank the season consult with Tonya Harding? After all, a healthy Dream could be a nightmare and ruin all the plans that have been made to get in a position to draft Kenyon Martin. ;-)
JT, I always want my Rockets to win, damn the lottery, but if they can't then I want to get the nubmer 1 pick. DaDakota "No guarentees in the lottery"
If Dream plays so well that we win enough games to pull us out of this hole and into the playoffs, I'll like our chances at an upset. So I'll definitely be rooting for Dream to crush the opposition, and be simultaneously happy to draft as high as possible.
If Orlando has Golden State's pick, but it is lottery-protected, then they will not want to fall in the middle ground. For the pick, they'll play really bad if they can't play well. DaDakota, Rudy didn't sign Mack because he's not part of our long-term plans. Even if (big if) Mack could really help us win games, does playing guys who will be around in the future instead of signing a quick-fix constitute tanking?
Let's be practical about this. The increase in probability of getting a top-3 pick (our number of ping pong balls as a percentage of the whole) diminishes after we get to the 6th worst record, exactly where we are now. Going from 7th to 6th worst increases our probability by 73%. Going from 6th to 5th gets us only a 54% increase, and it's all downhill from there. Let's shoot for #6. It gives us a realistic shot at popping a ball into the top 3 without sacrificing too much of our development and self-respect. And anyway, I don't think we can out-tank Krause. ------------------ In the lottery, as in the playoffs, it takes balls to win.
Valdez, I'm curious as to who you think, other than the obvious players like Francis, Cato and Rogers, is part of the Rockets long-term plans? Will, did you just use "self-respect" and "out-tank" in on breath? JT, you can keep your happy, little lottery thoughts safe. The Chronicle always goes on about how great Hakeem looks after an injury and as we've seen, its usually not what we expected. Personally, I'll believe it when I see it. I do think that having just Hakeem, rather than Dream and Big Sexy, on the low block will help this young team out alot. It kinda reminds me of the '94 team with more athleticism. One thing is certain, and I'm sorry to burst some of ya'lls bubbles, but we can't get any worse with Dream back in the lineup. ------------------ Tanking is not acceptable. End of story.
