THANK YOU. WTF do our (black) actors always have to be compared to or rated against only one another? What, are they supposed to be inferior? The way one would only rate female athletes against other women? Also, when they hell did being a good actor become all about the Murphy/Depp/Decaprio ability to portray a multitude of different characters? Sometimes I find that the best actors aren't always the most versatile, but the best at conveying to the audience that they're actually in the situations they're acting out. Say what you will about Denzel always being the same guy, but at least you get the feeling that he's really in the situations he's portraying. There's a lot of actors out there you can't say that about. And if any of you who are arguing Denzel can't act haven't seen "Cry Freedom," where he plays slain anti-Apartheid activist Steven Biko, you are coming from a position of ignorance.
I hope the directors, writers, and Denzel don't try to put a positive spin on this guy -- dude was pretty evil.
In that case Forest Whitikar and Sean Penn are the best American male actors today. No one comes close.
Hmm.. I think the black actors comparison was just a joke.. at least mine was. Anyways, I don't like Denzel because I thought his performance on Training Day was not Best Actor worthy.. and he's been playing the same role on almost all of his recent movies. And can't I dislike a guy just because I don't? It's like DeCaprio.. I reallly dislike him, but he's a damn good actor. I just don't like him. Anyways.. I was thinking if there should be any "Most Improved Actor" award, much like in the NBA, I think it would go to Will Smith. He went from Fresh Prince to Independence Day to The Pursuit of Happyness (given that it took more than a decade). I really like him as an actor. Btw, I remember him crying at Fresh Prince, I think it was the episode when his dad came back. That was weird.
Where has he been a good guy? Malcom X? He was screaming at everybody. percicles, you catch my drift. Another, c'mon, man... you can't see it? He's always playing the pompous know-it-all main dude. Why can't he be in a comedy or a horror movie? Why can't he be as versatile as Tom Hanks? Let's face it... he will MALCOM X: "I'm the boss! Plymouth rock was a rock that landed on us!" PHILADELPHIA: "I'm the boss! Let's talk about what we came here to talk about... homosexuals... right? I am a great lawyer, your honor! " REMEMBER THE TITANS: "I'm the boss! You football player dudes listen to me. If you don't listen to me, we won't win. Comprende, fat white dude?" MAN ON FIRE: "I'm the boss! You Mexican dudes will get your fingers chopped off by me, a black man from the Estados Unidos!" TRAINING DAY: "I'm the boss! You got a d**k, right? Well. You listen to me and everything will be allright. ROOKIE." FALLEN: "I'm the boss! I have been possessed by some effin' ghost! I will kill you!" GLORY: "I'm the boss! [i haven't seen this, so I have no quote]". MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE: "I'm the boss! You political dudes listen to me. I am going to shoot your *ss. I'm crazy, too." Same effin' character EVERY effin' movie. I am tired of his ass. Play a different role, DENZEL, please. Even though you're "insane", you agree with me... wait a minute... that means... oh, never mind.
or jack nicholson, or al pacino etc. alot of actors are even great ones. anyway, surprised no one mentioned this picture, these guys actually starred together before
I actually agree with to a certain extent on denzell, but you actually picked a few versatile roles. he wasn't all "i'm the boss" like in fallen and manchurian candidate.
I agree that Denzel plays the same role sometimes but he is versatile. Then people complain about him not doing other types of roles. I already mentioned 2 comedy films he has been in, he wasn't the boss in Glory, The Preacher's Wife, He Got Game, The Hurricane, Antwone Fisher, etc. Denzel doesn't play the same character in every movie, maybe in his most popular ones, but the guy has range. Go watch Carbon Copy, him and George Segal will have you laughing.
I'm glad to see 2 of my favorite actors work together, Denzel is solid in everything, he can go from Navy sub commander in Crimson tide to high school football coach in Remember the Titans to Ray Allen's dad in He got game. Denzel is really good, the only thing that bothers me is that he won the Oscar for Training Day over Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind, which was an unbelievable performance and one of the best movies I have ever seen. Denzel didn't hold a candle to Crowe's performance that yr. The academy really f'd that one up.
Al Pacino..?? Dog Day Afternoon, The Godfather, Scarface. Same genre.. yet.. three completely different personalities portrayed convincingly. not to mention taking part in a Romantic/drama/comedy- Scent of A Woman. and a thriller/horror - Devil's Advocate His only redundant roles = Carlito's Way, Serpico and Heat. I agree with you on Jack Nicholson.. To me he's always Ralph P. McMurphy.
Not much difference between the coach in Titans and Ray Allen's dad in He Got Game... The oscar's have been a sham for several years now.. Shame..
That year, as many people have said on this board, I believe they gave Washington the award for his body of work not just Training Day. I think it's a shame that The Shawshank Redemption had to be released the same year as Forrest Gump.
Until the Oscar Forest Whittaker was on my List of Underrated Actors His body of work is incredible From Fast Times are Ridgemont High [where he starred with Mr Penn] To Ghost Dog to The Crying Game to his recent stint on the Shield to The Last King of Scotland Rocket River Too many good Movies to name.
