So freaking true. Defense is great, but you still need something in the tank to play offense. Really damn good comparison.
pause? i will gladly accept a coach thats had the opportunity to play deep in the playoffs to those four great teams. Its way better than being a first round fodder. plus the only potential dynasty at this point is the spurs. i will happily take those odds
People forget that Adelman's 2003-2003 Sacremento Kings were ranked number 2 in the NBA just a hair behind the NJ Nets. Adelman knows defense but he also needs to have players that know how to play it. JVG instilled a defensive philosophy to his players that will undoubtly carry over to Adelman's team. You didn't see Detroit's defensive intensity go down after Larry Brown left did you? The Detroit players still play hard nosed defense. What's good about this situation is that you had JVG bringing them to one level and Adelman being able to build on that foundation.
Wait, did you just make compare Adelman and Van Gundy to Coach K and Gene Keady? College coaches recruit, too. And Duke gets a heck of a lot better talent than Purdue. Let's let Coach K and Gene Keady switch players this year, just so we can see who's the better coach.
speaking of dynasty... Man if the Jazz can keep their core together and their coach (which they probably will) and their fans (which they probably will)...as much as I hate to say this... they could be a force in the league for a good while. Boozer is pretty young and playing very well and you know Williams is going to be a biznatch for a good long while. He's so good and so young...and he's a Jazz. They have a coach who is good at getting the best out of everyone on his team (not a shot at JVG) and they are unbeatable at home... I hope something happens so they're not so good. A Williams trade, Boozer leaving them for more bank...SOMETHING! I don't want to see the Jazz be so good.
well deron will end up getting a max contract in about 2 seasons after his rookie contract expires so they will have to cut some cap space i believe. but they will just end up rotating their role players although boozer and okur do make alot of money. or maybe boozer will continue to be injury prone?
The most intelligent post all day. Chuck Hayes is a great over achiever but he neither has the length or the skill (something outside of a layup) to be playing anymore than backup minutes.
We knew what Deke could do and he refused to play him. Snyder knew Utah's schemes and he refused to play him too. Bad coaching.
We have pretty good players. Of course the team need some changes new PF and mayba one better player to the bench. I think Luther can be better nex year, we'll probbaly have Bonzi who is a great weapon of the bench. And the most importsnt think new coach...That should be the main change
Deke played and struggled to keep up with Boozer just like Yao did. Utah got rid of Snyder because he didn't know their scheme the first time around. You are a ****ing r****d.
I'm just saying, the trend looks very suspicious and that both these coaches Keady and Coach K came about the same time. Both are from major conferences and both schools are known as basketball Mecca's. Both schools have the ability to attract talent. In fact, this year if you look at the rankings for incoming recruiting classes Purdue is ranked ahead of Duke http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=676729. Keady in that long of a time frame and with the talent he had access to, should have had a better tournament record. That is why Keady and JVG can be compared.
By the way, Post Season Record comparison between Adelman and JVG is really where it counts. Lets examine these records. JVG Van Gundy is 430-318 as an NBA coach, including 182-146 with the Rockets. His overall playoff record is 44-44, including 7-12 with Houston. Van Gundy also owns a career 41-40 (.506) record in the postseason. Adelman 14 postseason appearances, including two trips to the NBA Finals with the Trail Blazers in 1990 and 1992. Adelman has a 752-481 record in 16 seasons and is 70-68 in the playoffs.<table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: collapse" bordercolor="#111111" width="100%"> <tr> <td width="33%"> </td> <td><b>Rick Adelman</b></td> <td><b>Jeff Van Gundy</b></td> </tr> <tr> <td><b>Seasons</b> </td> <td>16* </td> <td>11** </td> </tr> <tr> <td><b>Record </b></td> <td>752-481 </td> <td>430-318 </td> </tr> <tr> <td><b>Winning perc. </b></td> <td>.610 </td> <td>.575 </td> </tr> <tr> <td><b>Playoff record </b></td> <td>70-68 </td> <td>44-44 </td> </tr> <tr> <td><b>NBA Finals</b></td> <td>1990, '92</td> <td>1999 </td> </tr> <tr> <td><b>Conference finals</b></td> <td>1991, 2002</td> <td>2000</td> </tr> </table>
So basically Adelman is two games better than JVG in the playoffs. He's gotten them Two Western Conf Finals and Two NBA Finals. JVG has one NBA Final and One Eastern Conf Final. These two guys are pretty close in record but you'd have to give the edge to Adelman.
This is an interesting post but in reality it's more wishful thinking than anything else. You should have said that you are hopeful that Adelman builds on what JVG started defensively. Virtually everyone is assuming that this is a foregone conclusion when in reality what is most likely to happen is that they will remain a good or fairly good defensive team but not at the level they were under JVG. Whether that turns out to be a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen - it all depends on how well they finish up come next April.
Adelman has had good teams and bad teams defensivly. He's a players coach and if your players don't buy into what you're sellin, they just won't do it. The Adelman's team that almost knocked off the Lakers was ranked number 2 defensively in the NBA at the time.
