man this thread freaking bothers the hell out of me. what in the world is objective about taking the blazers? i guess it's because you think potential >>>>>>>>>>> proven talent.

Or we look at what the Rockets have and see a closing window that was only really cracked to begin with.

We have what, 2-3 years left of McGrady?

Does anyone really think we are going to be a better team than the Spurs, Mavericks, Suns in that time span? I don't.

Basketball goes in cycles where you are really good and then you aren't. The trick is being able to draft well to fill your team with talent to make good runs when you aren't really good. The Rockets blew that part of the cycle, and are now in a state of being just below the best teams with not much opportunity to get better.

But, has anyone realized how unlucky the Lakers are? They are in the worst spot right now. Just good enough to make the playoffs (hurt your draft position) but not good enough to actually do anything in the playoffs.

On a related subject, who would you rather be, Portland or Seattle? Portland gets to pick 1st and already had Roy, Aldridge and Randolph. But, Seattle will draft someone about as good, and have good vets in Lewis and Allen. Certainly, next season, Seattle will be the better team. Portland may end up with only Roy and Oden being worth anything.

Portland by far because they have more creativity at improving their team compared to us. Outside of Yao, McGrady, and Battier, we have absolute garbage on our team. And with no cap space, we don't have a great chance at improving the team without trading one of our best 3 players. Depresses the hell out of me when I think about it. :(

Portland... And if they draft Durant, they will immediately be my 2nd favorite team as a Longhorn grad.

portland, we have no future at all, when(if) Yao and T-Mac don't work we are screwed for the next 5 years. We'd have to trade an aging t-mac for youth but we won't get much

    Portland.

To me, there’s no greater joy than watching a young basketball team grow up before your very eyes. I’ve enjoyed watching the Baby Bulls grow the past couple of seasons. It was a blast to watch Golden State progress as the season went on. It’s even been kind of fun watching Phoenix’s young players (Amare, Barbosa, Diaw) progress as players. The Rockets kind of skipped that phase during the Yao-Mcgrady era and I think the fans got kind of jipped.

Being a fan of a grizzled old veteran team is no fun at all unless your team wins championships every year (very unlikely). It’s pretty much an all-or-none situation. Either you win the championship, or you’re miserable. With a young team, it’s much easier to enjoy even if you don’t win a championship. You can take solace in knowing your team has many more seasons to go and that you still have a lot of young talent that you can use in trades.

Apparently you missed the volume of posts about the vast potential sitting on the Rockets bench that was undermined and untapped by JVG...

People are overrating Brandon Roy. He'll never be at the level of McGrady. He'll be 23 in June, played in a little less than seventy percent of his rookie season, and averaged 16 points a game and four assists for a team that won thirty two games. Does anyone think there were any real future top 10 players in this past draft?

    thirty-two*

Greg Oden has a chance to be a top ten player in the league. A chance... Right now the Rockets have two top ten players under the age of thirty.

As in the west, Blazers can not win much in the next four years, first round out the most. After that, they wouldn't be able to keep all those "talents" on their roster together for sure.

You need to have a great team structure to win. Neither all young nor all veterans.

So Rockets and Blazers are on par.

The Portland trailblazers have improved themselves these last 2 drafts. They have cheap players they can trade or develop. they have flexability to create a roster that will have 2 to 3 years to develop and they will know for sure who they can play effectively.

In an interview yesterday on Rome- Nate McMillan- a very good coah IMHO- gave credit to the Roster to a Mr. Pritchard? (sp) not Steve Patterson.

Evidently Patterson is a figurehead only there.

they have a very wealthy owner who IMHO wants a non thug club now.

    Very fortunate organization

    The Rockets.

Unless Greg Oden has a development curve like Hakeem Olajuwon in his next 10 years (and there has only been ONE Hakeem Olajuwon), it is highly likely (IMHO, almost a certainty) that he will never eclipse Yao. Greg Oden is like a young Dwight Howard... full of 'potential', but with possibly much of that potential being an exaggeration. As a matter of fact, I have yet to see the potential of Greg Oden bringing an offensive game to his team the way Yao, Hakeem and Tim Duncan do.

Brandon Roy's only strength over T-Mac is his leadership (albeit a very important strength). No one has been comparing Roy to a young T-Mac at all this season. At this moment, Roy's highest potential is borderline All-Star, not guaranteed All-Star.

People, please appreciate what you have, and not compare to the other person. Would you have wanted to be Portland this season and get the no. 1 pick? Guess not.

Tough question because I love the rox, but if the Rockets do not win the first round this year they are done. I guess Portland. Great thread man.

Don't forget to compare their role players to ours. Randolph has more trade value than anyone on our roster not named Yao and Tmac even though he is a malcontent. Also, dont forget that McGrady plays like he only has 2-3 yrs left (he even said publicly that he was gonna retire after his deal ends) and Yao is not really a "proven" talent as he hasn't performed well in any playoff series so far. IMO Yao is potential in a way too, as he hasn't produced any results when it's mattered. I know it sucks to say this, but I don't think this Rockets team with its assets has the ability to win a championship unless Yao can truly "dominate" in the playoffs, McGrady starts playing like he did back in Orlando (maybe even 04-05), and the management makes tremendous personnel decisions. On the other hand, Portland has things in place and just has to build around their young stars now.
