Beyond Tradition . . .why exactly are their 162 games? that is a WHOLE LOT OF GAMES The best won't rise to the top over the course of 82 games? Rocket River
There used to be only 2 rounds of playoffs. The season was highly important in determing the best. I believe even now a fewer percentage of teams make the playoffs than in the NBA or NFL. So a long regular season is crucial in determing who is best. Also, a long MLB season isn't as hard on the body. I think the NBA season should be shortened to around 70 games. Practically half the teams make the playoffs anyways.
Over the course of a baseball season, every team will win 50 games (at one point looking like world-beaters), every team will lose 50 games (at one point looking like the worst team in the league)....... its those other 50-62 games that separate the men from the boys. The regular season is EVERYTHING in baseball... the question you should be asking is why after a 162 game season in which everybody eventually plays up (or down) to their career averages, they settle everything in a 15-20 game crapshoot of a playoffs.
Even better: Why do the St. Louis Cardinals claim to be co-champions for 2001? What the heck is a co-champion?
What are the numbers relative to position? I hear things like 4-5-6 double play (not necessarily that arrangement) all the time. What number does each position have?
Thanks Guys. I'm very marginally into Baseball and 162 games to me seems like an Aweful lot of games However, I doubt that the games would get more exciting if there were less I have no good reason to shorten the season but was really curious Rocket River
exactly right. it used to be that if you had the best record in your league (NL or AL) after 162 games, then you were the league champ. then you played the team from the other league with the best record in the World Series. later they split the league into 2 divisions and added a layer of playoffs for the league championship. now they have 3 rounds by allowing in wild card teams.
An even deeper root is because in the old days you couldn't watch the games on TV (cause there was no TV) so that's how they made money, and its how people got to see the teams. The whole thing arose from barnstorming teams that would play in tons of cities on long whistlestop tours so the number of games was inconsequential. You might have just played a game in Easton, PA, the night before, but nobody in Harrisburg saw/heard/knew anything about it, so play another one....etc.
Used to be 154 for years until it was changed to 162 in the early 60s. I'd rather see a shorter season and expanded playoffs.
I think games need to be faster. A quick game is three hours long. As soon as the third out is made, they need to hustle out there and cut the commercials. Same thing with football. When a team punts or kicks, they got to a 3 minute commercial break. Get your asses on the field!!!!!!!!
i'd like to see the NBA season lengthened...not in terms of games player but the time span. Extend it another month and you can eliminate the back to backs and give the players alittle more rest between games
wow..seriously? if there's any sport that should shorten its season it's NBA. please...if you're gonna allow everyone in the playoffs, there is no reason to play 82 games.
