This movie is spectacular. The theatre I went was packed there was a long line and we showed up 30 min early. But be warned it is pretty violent and most of it is not fantasy despite the trailer. Spoiler To any one who has seen it. So was she imagining stuff the whole movie?
I wanted to watch it overseas a few months ago when it came out, but never got around to it. After hearing these glorious reviews, I'll be seeing it soon.
I went to a preview screening in December, and it simply blew my mind. I actually forgot I was watching a movie, it was THAT good. Everyone should make an effort to see it. Spoiler I don't think she was imagining it. Because at the end, Pan said she'd made the ultimate sacrifice by saving her brother.
The trailer was absolute s**t...way too many cuts and I had no idea what the story was really about. I'm not a big Del Toro fan either so I'll probably pass...it does seem interesting though. And had they made better previews I'd probably be more inclined to see it.
I finally saw this movie last night. I thought it was brilliant. An extremely dark "fairytale" pits the cruel reality of life (in war-stricken Spain) against the purity of love and a child's willingness to give in to her "imagination." Or, is she really the Princess of the Underworld... Highly recommended.
absolutely brilliant film, one of the best ive seen in quite some time Spoiler as for the debate about whether shes imagining things or if theyre real, on the commentary of the dvd del toro lists out a few things that make him think that ofelia is not imagining things for example, when she goes to get her brother from the captain at the end, her chalk is on the table...he says that if it was all her imagination, where in the world did that piece of chalk come from
Spoiler Also, the mandrake root which she puts under her mothers bed, once it's removed she dies I enjoyed this movie so much, thought it was an excellent film in line with what fair tales originally were like before they got disney-ed Still think it should have won the Oscar
is it as dark as Return to Oz? don't laugh, that movie is the exact opposite of the Wizard of Oz and scared the **** out of me as a kid.
Movie was nothing spectacular. Only reason people like it is beacuse of its gimmicky nature. Anytime a filmmaker cranks out a "dark" fairy tale, the critics crap over themselves about how great the movie is. it's a gimmick.
I had the DVD version of it in Spanish since last year and it was totally awesome. I could only see it in pieces, though, since my kids were always around and my wife was scared to see the FAUNO even on the posters. It is NOT a kid's movie, BTW. Spoiler From your point of view, everything was real. From the ADULTs' point of view, everything was imagined by the girl. TRIVIA STUFF: the creatures (pale man and fauno) were played by DOUG JONES, the same actor who played the fishy guy in HELLBOY. I absolutely enjoyed watching the lady that came out in "Y tu mamá también" with Gael Garcia Bernal act in this one. It's a totally different role for her. Your nickname should be "hateballa"
Mexican cinema has been experiencing a sort of Renisance over the last 10 years. I'm personally grateful that there's something counterbalancing that bullsh*t b*stard hybridization that you see in Robert Rodriguez and Mencia.
Under that reasoning then Leprechaun should've been an Oscar nominee... Saw two weeks ago and agree it was a great movie. Yes it is a twist on fairy tales but it is a very engrossing story. Its also great how they interweave the Spanish Civil War story with the fairytale story. Amazing acting job too from the girl who plays the main character. Spoiler The imagine it or not imagine it part is hard to say and I think its deliberately meant to be ambiguous. At the end when Ofelia is talking to Pan her stepfather doesn't see Pan but then there is stuff like the Mandrake root and the chalk outline of the door for her to escape the locked room. I don't think the question of whether she imagines it or not is central to the story. Also Mercedes is played by the same actress from Yu Tu Mama Tambien. While she does a great job she looks a lot less attractive in Pan's Labyrinth.
You see that's your problem son. You read it as a fairly tale and it's not. Granted it has elements of Fantasy but that illusion is broken towards the end when you realize it's all in the girls mind. In that regard it's similar to films like The Fisher King and Fight Club.
You know, one of those dudes that makes the rest of the club dudes' night look stewpid when they act silly at a club... and all the girls say: "Oh, no... that dude is with that group... do not talk to any of them..." and so you call that one dude "The Spoiler" of the group of dudes. Hey, that's not a bad idea. spoiler: a statement to tell a secret of the story in a movie to someone that has not seen the same movie yet macalu, commended performance on the TAAKS, man. Thank you, very much.
