i saw it and i actually liked it alot. very very different. and very very very brutal and violent. but all comes together to form a mesmerizing film. i just turned 17 and i can honestly say no1 under 16 should think about seeing it.... it is so so violent and disturbing. i was a lil disapointed by the ending.. but it fit a very dreary movie.. i havent read the book but supposedly its good. o yah if u dont know what the movie from hell is about its on jack the ripper. overall i liked it. has some similarities to sleepy hollow that r both good n bad. very very neo-goth/artsy too. not for every1 but if u want to see something very different go see it.
I liked sleepy hollow, so I should like this huh? I think I will see it tomarrow. Glad you mentioned it...too bad mr. swirvy-know-it-all-about-movies has lost it or something.
I haven't seen it yet, of course, but I remember watching a doc. on History channel that Jack the Ripper referred to himself as "from Hell" in a letter to tease the police. Does this play a significance in the movie?
Yeah, I've kinda fallen behind on movies. I'm seeing it tomorrow and the review for that and Joy Ride (very good flick), should be up soon.
I myself, hated this movie. I am really not into these old time movies Johnny Depp is doing all these movies which sets in the past (Chocolat, Sleepy Hallow, Don Juan). I actually fell asleep during the movie and I was a bit shock about the ending. To watch a REAL GOOD movie that is out is The Last Castle.
I really need to see this. Do you think it qualifies as a horror movie then? Dave2000: I thought Last Castle was only above average. Redford seemed kind of wrong for the part, like he never really was in a prison. It feeds a lot of patriotism that's going to gain it some points (and does a good job of this) but parts of it felt a little too formulaic and overdramatic. Gandolfini, though, I thought did a decent job with the part he had.
Very good movie. Even though I'm not sure I buy their guess as to who the killer was, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It's not a horror flic, more of a mystery/thriller. Cinematography and visual effects were excellent, helped alot with creating atmosphere. Depp was very good. Heather Graham was hot. The movie, BTW, is much more graphic/violent than Sleepy Hollow. The difference is partly due to subject matter, partly due to the director (the Hughes Brothers versus Tim Burton). Other than the fact that both are set in the past, and involve Johnny Depp, the comparison doesn't hold up.
Good movie. Actually not nearly as violent as it could have been; many of the murders are left to the imagination. It does have some gore, though (particularly the last one). Depp was good as usual. All of the performances are pretty solid. Also, it was fairly well researched. Training Day was better, though.
If From Hell is worse than The Last Castle then I'm definitely not bothering. The Last Castle was just ugh, kinda pointless. Looking forward to K-Pax this Friday though. Some other ones too like The Heist, Monsters Inc., The Royal Tenenbaums, and that Lord of the Rings looks pretty damn cool.
tree, would you change your post, so that you don't give away the movie to those who haven't seen it?
Damn I saw the preview for that at some other movie (Don't say a Word I think, which was really good I thought) and it looked awesome. I wasn't a huge fan of the hobbit back in 5th grade but this movie just looked so cool. And thank goodness it comes out over the christmas holiday so I can see it. Also The One looks great also. If From Hell is as graphic as y'all say then I think I definitely need to see it.
Apparantly, The Lord of the Rings is currently something like 3.5 hours long. I'm not too pumped about it, but I've also never read the stuff.
All I ever read was the hobbit and i'm still pumped. Seriously, if you see the preview you will be pumped and if you aren't then I guess you never will be. Although I will say 3.5 hours kinda sucks.
3.5 hours? Kickass. I thought they would over-condense it and leave out a lot. I'll be there. I'll probly see From Hell too, just not sure when. I've always had an interest in Jack the Ripper. Crazy stuff.
I saw "Bones" yesterday & it's not scary at all. I think Snoop's got potential as an actor, but the movie never really sets up the parts that could've been scary & then they made a very weak attempt at comedy with the talking heads. It really sucks.
