I'm getting tired of all these different SKUs. I'd rather this not be true, although if it is, Sony better not pull a MS and increase the price. I don't think a $700 PS3 will help sales any (especially if it is no different than a $600 PS3, outside of the extra 20GB...what else could they add?).

Well if Microsoft is making theirs black. Sony should make theirs white.

Sony has made it very easy for users to just replace their hard drive.

20GB more space seems to small to bother. Must be something else. Maybe Sony is disguising something since other companies steal their thunder when they announce anything. Perhaps a new color scheme?

I hope that isn't the whole reason for another SKU. Sounds like all the companies have come down with a case of the stupid this generation.

    Heh.

One thing I didn't consider is that I guess using a 80GB HDD might be as cheap or cheaper for Sony than the HDDs they're using now (since it might be more common). So they might as well put it in a SKU.

If they were to keep the 2 SKUs roughly the same (same price, roughly same features), but use a 20GB/80GB or 60GB/80GB setup, I might be OK with this. Seems like it would be really confusing though, especially if they did it somewhat soon.

And if that is the case, I'm guessing they would continually do this every so often...which might be even more confusing.

So I guess this all explains the 80GB PS3 stuff that went on earlier in the year (when I made this thread):

this makes no sense to me if the xbox went 120 gb i would think sony would counter with at least a 120 if not bigger, esp if their online content is supposed to expand greatly in the future. i have a xbox elite and while i havent really taken advantage of the larger hd drive yet (1080p hdmi yes!) it will be helpful in the future when i download some hd movies off of live. last time i dl'ed a movie my hd was nearly full with a few demos and that, now i have no worries i just dl away anything and most everything.

wasnt there a silver ps3 released? i remember seeing some pics, maybe japan only?

The silver PS3 you saw is probably the model they showed off at E3 in 2005. IIRC, they used that model in all the official pictures, but they also displayed models that were black and white. They decided to launch with only one of those three colors, and that would be the color that was received the best (black won out obviously). I'm sure they'll release PS3s in the future that are silver, white, and probably several other colors (maybe a hot pink PS3 to match the PS2s and PSPs they released).

I doubt the decision to use a 80GB HDD was due to the 360 Elite SKU, or even due to the VOD services they have planned in Korea and the rest of the world (if they can ever get those services implemented anyway). Chances are that a 80GB HDD costs roughly the same as a 60GB HDD to Sony (maybe even cheaper), so they decided to go with it and promote the extra value they're giving consumers. Anyone with a PS3 that needs more HDD space than 20-60 GB has probably already bought a bigger HDD anyway (or they should have), so Sony probably doesn't feel the need to up their default HDD size as much as Microsoft.

Do you have a 1080p tv? They are trying to phase those in to the casual consumer because 1080i max HDTVs are becoming so affordable.

Seriously, what makes Sony think anyone is gonna spend..I assume $650-$699 for a console with no games, very limited connectivity, crappy controller, no hdmi cords (let alone components) and plays movies that cost $30 each?

All this from a company that is trying to push Blu-ray and HDTV's yet they give you A/V cables. You guys lost...

unless....they have something up there sleeves...tricky bastards

its all about the markups on the cables, most people still tend to buy cables from a brick and mortar which are an arm and a leg..i buy all my cables online the only time i didnt is when i needed an optical cable asap. but yeah i bought a blu ray player and all that came with it were standard rca cables, i mean wtf is that all about at the very least include component cables so it can function somewhat....

the only time where i can say it was done right was with the xbox elite..it came with both the component hd adapter and a hdmi cable.

If this SKU were brought to the US, it probably won't retail for more than a 60GB PS3 (or it better not). They might price cut the 60GB SKU, but I would think it would be easier/better to just maintain the one 80GB SKU (unless they wanted to bring back the 20GB SKU). Otherwise, it should phase out the 60GB SKU rather than being introduced as a newer, more expensive option for customers. One thing to note is that it will probably have the same (or similar) solution to backwards compatibility that the European PS3s had, so this might be a good way to figure out which PS3 to buy if that is a major issue to you (60GB PS3s have 98% BC, 80GB PS3s have 75%-80% BC or whatever it is).

I agree with you about the cables, although I think it is overblown a bit. There are plenty of other things to get angry about than whether or not Sony included HD cables with their systems IMO.
