HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Rockets hired Rick Adelman to replace Jeff Van Gundy, hoping the veteran NBA coach can break the team’s recent history of postseason flops. ‘‘I always knew I was going to look for something eventually,’’ Adelman said Tuesday night as he arrived at an airport in Houston, where he was met by team officials. ‘‘This is obviously just a great situation with the city, the organization. I’m really excited. This is a team that played so solid last year. You can build on that.’’ The Rockets will introduce Adelman at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon. Adelman, 60, brings an up-tempo, high-scoring system to Houston, a stark contrast to Van Gundy’s more defense-minded and methodical approach. Van Gundy was fired Friday after the Rockets were bounced from the opening round of the playoffs for the third time in his four seasons.
I'm not blaming him for everything....only for having a basic offensive scheme with around 4 plays. Our offense was basic prior to this season. I don't think you need a team full of scrubs to run more than 4-5 plays.

So, I guess he doesn't need Yao and T-mac healthy the entire year... looks like that's one less thing I have to worry about, because I don't think their complete health is very likely.

I just wanted to get my "welcome Adleman" in. And I also wanted to say for those who think that VSpan cant be a productive PG in this league " Did you not watch him destroy the olympic team?" I am not saying that Adelman is going to stop this guy from turning the ball over, that would be like saying that his offense will make Yao look like a gazelle. But he will let him control the ball and make decisions. He will let him drive the lane and allow him to do the things that made him effective for the Greek National team. Now that I have vented that little bit, that being said, I would like to see us upgrade the PF spot and develop Vspan this off season if we only have the choice/cap space to do one or the other. Atleast I may be able to stomach a game we are loosing now knowing that we may actually have an offense capable of catching a team from behind or being able to score on them the whole freaking game vs 3 qtrs!!
Well Portland won the Lotto last night and it's a certainty that they will add Oden. You put him in with the young talent they already have and if the Trailblazers can get some coaching stability then there is NO WAY the Rockets will even be in the ball park so to speak. The fact that both Seattle & Portland got the top two spots made me sick to my stomach. And to answer your question, no I would not make that deal if I'm Boston. Boston needs players not expiring contracts.
In how many years? It took MJ 6 years and the Dream 10 to win it all. I care about next year, nothing we can do right now about the following years.
Who's responible for the Rockets' 2nd round pick last year? Watching the Jazz play in the playoffs and seeing Millsap come off the bench and contribute significantly (for a rookie) reminded me of who the Rockets could have picked. Millsap was one of the big rebounding bodies still on the board when the Rockets picked that Israeli player who had no chance of even playing in the U.S. this year, let alone contributing. Who is making the draft decisions? They seem to deprive the Rockets of any chance of developing young players.
Speaking of "repat basis", the Rockets sure have a track record with useful foreign picks outside of Yao, don't they? Boki, Badiane, Spanoulis, Lior, Turkcan...
Can't argue with that truism, but you miss my point. The Rockets have a history of making bad draft decisions and for all I know the same guys are still in charge. Last year's 2nd round draft pick is just the most recent, glaring example of a pattern of bad choices. The Rockets publically say they need more rebounding and to get better at the 4 spot. Paul Millsap is on the board, the guy who "Led the nation in rebounding for the third straight season, becoming the only player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in rebounding in three consecutive years." The Jazz were smart enough to figure out that Millsap could help them and they have Boozer as the starting PF. How much more help could Millsap have been on the Rockets team? Instead the Rockets pick another small forward, not a position of need. And pick a player who has no chance of playing for the Rockets when they're in "win now" mode. It's like they gave up with their last pick. It's not a question of finding steals, it's a question of picking players that at least have the potential to help your team. I don't see how the Rockets can improve if they keep blowing their draft picks. And it seems like the guys making these bad picks aren't being help accountable.
Depends... Turkcan=bust Boki= not very useful for Rockets, still no more than a rotation player. Badiane= bust, most likely, aren't even doing well in Europe, I think. Lior= TBD. But if you are buying a pick and have needs, Millsap is a better guy to take a chance on.. Span= TBD, didn't look good in first year, but even 29 year old Oberto wasn't very useful in the first season, much more so in the 2nd season... so I have hope. Really, though, besides Yao, the #1 pick, the Rockets international ventures (ranging from mid 1st rounders down to the 2nd round) have not fared very well... not compared to, say, San Antonio. I don't think managment is horrible... they get the big decisiosn right... Yao, Tracy, Battier are all good choices. Chuck was a decent move. That's why they managed to be a 4th seed despite injuries. However, they get enough of the "little" decisions wrong so that the good players they come up with in the big decisions lack the support to go any further than they did.
