You can never have enough bullpen guys. Even if this guy is washed up, if he is serviceable that will allow us to use any one of the other quality guys as a bargaining tool in a trade. I am waiting on Purpura to get us something. There should be plenty of money and payroll flexibility to get a hitter and pitcher by the break.
They had given up something like 1 run in 29 innings before today. A day like today is bound to happen every once in a while. No one can argue that Borkowski, White, Miller, Lidge, Qualls, & Wheeler haven't been damn good to this point. I guess you could let Moehler go, especially with Jennings coming back soon, but Percival hasn't done crap for a few years now. If Purpura is going to make a move, it's not going to be this one.
I never said he could come in and dominate. I just said it wouldn't hurt to look at him. I'm not a fan of Moehler. It seems like everytime I watch him pitch he throws batting practice. I wouldn't drop a tear if he was cut. I know the Pen has been a strong point and what happened yesterday is bound to happen from time to time. I agree with what Kerfeld said. You can never have enough bullpen guys.
It makes you mad that the Cardinals signed a 37 year old who hasn't pitched in over 1 1/2 years and who had an ERA close to 6.00 in 2005 to a minor league contract?
Did you happen to look before his injured 2005 season? Look at that, then get back to me. At a minor league contract, there is nothing to lose. It is all reward, no risk.
I am just surprised that it makes anyone when the Astros don't sign a 37 year old pitcher coming off a 1 1/2 year retirement/injury to a minor league contract when they currently have plenty of pitchers that are better than him. Actually, I guess, I shouldn't be surprised. I also suspect that if Percival took a look at the Astros bullpen, he wouldn't see a place for himself. Although Moeller is still around, the Astros will need to make a move when White is ready to come off the DL. Why waste a minor league position on a pitcher you don't need? Let the younger/healthier players get their innings.
Bullpen is not a pressing issue for the Astros right now. Why would Percival sign here with all the competition instead of a team that offers him more opportunity to get back to the bigs rapidly?
