I know that it has happened before (James Buchanan) but I mean in today's world would it be possible? When I say non-married I mean single or widowed/divorced without getting remarried.

Can it happen in North America?I'm not sure.Considering that our politicians go out of their way to preach strong family values,A person who is single would be viewed as an individual lacking leadership.
I wish family values weren't such a big issue, but they are.I mean some of the world's greatest men haven't been Ideal husbands or fathers.

She/he'd probably have to fly across the moon like some Charles Lindberg or be some war hero to overshadow it. I imagine there'd be reoccurring rumors of that person being gay with a revolving door of possible partners.

I think a candidate in a sham marriage and a rogues gallery of other lovers would have a better chance, post Clinton.

Yes, especially a widower. A guy whose wife died will be getting sympathy votes, not losing votes because he isn't married.

It happened during Victorian era, I don't see why it can't happen now.

Clinton was married in name only, and he was elected twice.

Yeah, all they have to do is get the necessary votes.

You missed the point. He WAS married. Hillary also said we were getting "two for one". Bill Clinton wouldn't have sniffed the White House as a single man because outward appearances count for so much in America when electing a president. I think that's one reason Hillary hasn't let Bill go.

IMO, a never-married or divorced person running for president would be at a huge disadvantage. But I'm not ready to say they couldn't win. A widow or widower has a smaller image problem.

Campaigns were also run very differently then too and a candidate didn't have to rely on looks and a telegenic family to help him win.

I don't think an unmarried candidate could win at the moment.

Which is why I laughed during and after Monicagate when reporters commented on how strong a woman she was. Her political ambition was already evident, and staying with Bill eliminated all doubt. It's also a safe bet that her anger was for Bill getting caught publicly than the actual cheating itself.
