Just got to tell you youngsters that it gave my old decrepit heart a skip to see and hear Rocket legend Mike Newlin fill in for Calvin Murphy on last night's FOXSW telecast of the Miami game. Reminded me of Newlin, hippie long hair & all, diving along the floor at the SUMMIT chasing loose balls for our RED & GOLD Rockets back in the 70s. Damn....pass the Geritol AND the Viagra!! PS: if you don't believe me, check out Clutch's history section. The man was baaaad! ------------------ Just Win Baby! More Than Four Times!
Dang ... you are so right RMT. You beat me to it! I was going to post something about Shark this AM too!!! Pretty good reporting as a color man. Actually, I thought a lot during the game, about a three man coverage with Murph, Mike and Bill. (There was a lot of opportunity to think of other things during the game!)That would be a good tag team of knowledgeable broadcasters. Maybe start out as a limited version, say only on odd home games or something. Dang. I think I'll make some phone calls this AM on that very thing. Anyway thanks RMT, Mike was a terror on the court.
Thanks Popeye! Good idea on the 3 man broadcasting team. Mike really was good last night. Clutch...you've got so many cool pictures on this site, and you especially dig up the great ones on Retro days like today. Have you got any pix of Mike Newlin in action from back in the day? ------------------ Just Win Baby! More Than Four Times!
Sounds like a good idea. We need to honor the Rockets that paved the way. The reto look is 'En Fuego' baby. What do you all think of Kenny Smith? I think he has really added some life to TNT. And that's saying a lot because they were already pretty good. "That's sick!" I kind of like John Thompson as a broadcaster too. I hate the guy (I dated a girl who know's his daughter, and the stories I could tell), but he's kind of funny and calls the game like he see's it. A little biased toward big east players, but overall, pretty good.
My most favorite part of Kenny "The Jet" Smith on the Turner: TBS,TNT,Etc... is: He easily faces up Peter Vecsey without breaking a sweat. PV reminds me of Bob Via (This Old House) ... that is .... he takes himself far more seriously than anyone else. EVER. Like Bob, he talks like he is talking to complete idiots all the time. You don't have to be a die-hard basketball fan to know that Michael Jordan played a guard postion, that the court has a basket hoop at both ends or that the ball they use in the NBA is actually round. He announces these things like he's being paid to state the obvious. Kenny just looks over his left shoulder, smiles and says something like: " Gee, Pete. Where'd you learn that little gem? " Or, when Vecsey makes inane, ridiculous statements like " Ya know, Hakeem is finished, it's time for him to let Duncan, Shaq, and Ostertag dominate the game." Kenny:"Gee, Peter, I think Hakeem might have something to say about that. And, what does Hakeem's playing for the Rockets got to do with Duncan or Shaq's team efforts. And, (Laughter), I mean, Ostertag??????(Laughter) Did you hit your head today???? He's not even in the same solar system with these guys!" Ya! I love Kenny when he's on with PV the loser. I think its certainly funner to listen to Calvin, but it seemed like during that Heat game, Mike Newlin just had lots of basketball knowledge that we don't often hear from Calvin. It's an interesting change for the moment. I remember when Calvin and Mike had a clinic up at the Cypress Creek YMCA for free. I went and really can't remember how well each of them shot. But I have trouble believing anyone can beat Calvin in a game of horse. He has a funny twitch he does with the ball before it is released from above his head, but by Job it works! At some of the camps I have attended under him he'll go to the free throw line and make 20 free throws in a row and make it look like an afterthought. Just an amazing shooter.
Mike Newlin talked to much about some **** up stuff. Like saying hamilton has good ball handling skills!! That was so funny. He wasnt all that bad but sure as hell boring. CALVIN HURRY UP AND GET BACK...
If the Rocket Front Office had class, they would retire Newlin's number NOW. He was a pioneer, along with Murph and Rudy, a true Rocket original. Scoring 33 points and the like when there were 4000 people in the stands for opening night of the 76-77 season. Eight years of that, and they do not even give him the respect he deserves. Shameful. Wonderful guy, great rocket, Go Shark, you rule CBrownFanClub
I don't think his number will be retired, since he did not finish his career with Houston. I loved his game while he was here though. I wonder why they traded him back then.
The man, the myth, the legend himself: Thanks CLUTCH for the killer pic! I can smell the incense and see the leisure suits! THE SHARK RULES! ------------------ Just Win Baby! More Than Four Times! [This message has been edited by RocketMan Tex (edited January 12, 2000).]
