Well i don't know if there is any point of discussing the Vspan vs JVG matter any more....I just finished reading a greek sport's related newspaper (GOAL) and there was an article inside about Spanoulis.. This article was an interview from Spanoulis manager ( a Serbian manager, sorry but i don't remember the name).Anyway when we was asked about his client's future, he replied that Vspan will probably return back to Europe...he said that Vassilis doesn't feel good about leaving Houston, but he can't risk another bench year....he will probably return to Greece Champions Panathinaikos to ensure playing time. According to this article, Spanoulis gave Panathinaikos a 3-day deadline to decide whether to make an offer for him or not..After that he will examine some other offers ( reports say that Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Tau Ceramica have declared interest). Well as i said, probably it's not a matter about JVG vs Span anymore...

Yep...there is a lengthier article at sportime.gr. ACCORDING TO HIS MANAGER (not Span himself), and I quote: "The Rockets desperately want him to stay in Houston. They're trying to convince him that with the new coach his PT will rise straight up. That next year he will be a key-player for the team. Exactly what should've happened this season. Spanoulis has decided to come back to Europe and not risk another season on the bench." As far as I know Span keeps saying he isnt sure what he'd rather do next season and I believe his manager is an idiot and he only wants Span to come back because he'll make money on the deal. I just hope span stays in the rockets next season....
There's also new entry in his blog at sport24.gr... I'll try to find some time and send a more detailed translation. In summary he wrote that he wants to be happy wherever he plays... He also stressed that this year the Rockets have supported him very much and that people in Houston love him... I think he wants to stay in Houston but isn't sure that this is the right decision for his career.
Sounds like spin from his manager.....the bottom line is that V-Span is under contract, and he has no choice, he plays for Houston next year, or not at all. And, if he sits, the contract just sits idle too (He can't play on ANY Fiba team).....he is locked in.......once the JVG mess is cleared up and the new coach talks to him, I believe he will be back. DD
Spanoulis COULD see more minutes regardless of the coach if he proves he deserves them. I mean Chuck Hayes went from playing sparingly as a rookie to starting in a year. Most coaches don't play players who were picked 50+ in the draft when the team is contending for a play off spot just so they can develope. Expecting Spanoulis to be the next Tony Parker/Ginobili is a bit much. Hopefully he does contribute more next year, but it is a huge stretch to think he was the missing link this year. I mean even the JVG hater's would be hard pressed to say they don't think Jeff wanted to win. With that in mind you really think he buried Spanoulis on the bench because he had some vendetta against him? Or is it much more likely that seeing performance in practice every day he was not impressed enough to play him? I mean he was competing against John Lucas III and Rafer for minutes! You think Jeff wouldn't play a better player if he truely was dominating in practices? He played Hayes as an undrafted rookie, so I find that unlikely.
His draft position is irrelevant because he was drafted as a project, if he was in the draft last year, he would have been first round. Why? He was as good as them in the Euro league, why can't he become as good as them? He just needs a coach who is willing to let him learn from his mistakes, then we shall see. The counter to that is that JVG doesn't like V-Spans game. He said repeatedly that V-Span was a high risk, high reward player, and it seems to me that JVG likes to limit risk more than take it........which would put V-Span squarely on the bench. What we do know is that JVG chose Rafer, and Rafer is crap......but at least he is low risk........ DD
if JVG returns, i'd bet that vspan gets more minutes...given he continues to work on his NBA game in the offseason. i think delusions and wishful thinking has polluted peoples brains...lets face it when you put all your faith into a rookie euro combo guard, who cant shoot particularly well and isnt that great of an athelete then you are grasping for staws...not to mention the guy wouldnt even be in the nba if the rockets were able to get another pg in FA.
Well shooting is not one of his strengths...and if some you think otherwise, then you haven't really see him play...his strengths are penetration, drawing fouls, playing the PnR well and very good defensively. Not to mention the hustle and evergy he brings to the floor... Probably he is in the NBA NOW because of Rockets...who knows what would happen in a year or two..you cant have a conversation based on assumptions. Putting their faith in him maybe is wrong, but signing a contract with him just to let him rot in bench without even try to develop his game is even worse
Some people read all the threads that mention Spanoulis with their VG myopic glasses on cough- rocket g- cough.when i say '' span didn't really dazzle anyone with his performance, especially the ones that know his potential '' they read '' he was spectacular and could have saved us'' and so on and so on. i guess not all Greeks have become familiar with Aristotele's theory on LOGIC and how to use it in real life. No wonder a lot of Greeks don't even speak to other Greeks. And something else if Spanoulis was playing like let's say Alston ( VG's pet ) I wouldn't dream of supporting him greek or no greek. Then again Alston is only supported by assistant coach JVG who ''really understands basketball'' and his followers .Let's hope they follow him in his early retirement or whatever it is he's calling it. It wasn't his fault he couldn't put together a good supporting crew for a team with two superstars and finally make it to the second round NOOOO it was the people who believed Spanoulis deserved a little more pt , they jinxed him .Who u're playing with homy? Can't u see i'm loco? :
