While I am a Van Gundy supporter and am not happy about the decision to dismiss him, there is one particular aspect of hiring Rick Adelman at this time that I like: Mike Bibby. Bibby has a good relationship with Adelman and played his best basketball under him in Sacramento. He can opt out of the final year of his contract this summer, although he wouldn't be able to get nearly as much on the open market. While this may be against the rules, I'm wondering if Adelman (who I don't think is currently affiliated with the NBA) may be talking to Mike to see if he'd be willing to come to Houston this summer. Bibby needs to ask himself if he's more interested in making more money (remember, he's already earned all but one year of the HUGE deal he signed a while back) or being an integral part of a championship contender. The Rockets provide a unique opportunity for Bibby: To be a MAJOR part of a contender. Sure, he could go to Dallas or San Antonio or Phoenix or somewhere where the current roster of players has a better chance at winning a title, but he wouldn't stand to have a big a role as he would have on the Rockets. A team led by McGrady, Yao and Bibby would be about as good as any in the league. Memo to Daryl Morey: If Bibby somehow opts out of his deal, you and Rick better be standing on his doorstep at 12:00am when free agency begins with a full MLE deal in hand (5 yrs/~$40M). While this wouldn't be a slam dunk by any stretch of the imagination, it is still worth it. THIS is how the Rockets could become serious contenders.
and then trade howard for artest, ask wells stay, sign cwebber for vet min, sign peja after he got cut
Sorry we are the Houston Rockets not the Sacramento Queens. But then again it doesn't look that bad either. Bibby can run the offense, Peja can shoot the open 3s and Webber could hit the midrange jumpers. Not a bad idea if you ask me lets make it happen. It's a huge upgrade over what we got in the lineup right now.
Don't kid yourself, it is always about the money. He has to much money on the table there to walk away.
Heard this morning on 610 or 790, can't remember.... they were talking to one of the writers for the Sacramento Bee about Bibby, and Bibby has every intention of staying with the Kings. He's going to make 12.5 million each year for the next two years.
It seems like we always get PGs that were associated with the old Vancouver Grizzlies.. I've watched bibby since his vancouver days and although he's getting old, if he is willing to come at a cheaper price lets sign him up. He can split the minutes 30/18 with alston
Wow, Bibby is 14 million dollars question. I like Bibby's clutch shootings, his poise but he gets no defense, most time doesnt even try to defend. I dont think it is possible anyway.
if were to bring in a healthy bonzi and artest then the PF position would not be as vital but still important.
Since the doors to the asylum are going to swing wide open, let's go all the way and get Artest, and bring back Bonzi. Good character guys like Juwan, Deke and Battier need to go.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think this is likely to happen. I'm just throwing out the possibility based on the whole Rick Adelman angle. I know it's almost always all about the money. But don't forget that Danning Manning, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and Gary Payton were all once dominant players who (while still playing at a very high level) took a major paycut to play for a winning team. Here's hoping Mike Bibby to the Rockets will be the next player on that list. However unlikely.
I just got to thinking about this crazy situation... What's to prevent us from hiring Bibby's wife to work in management as a "consultant" for 2-3 mil/year? I don't even know if he's married, but does the NBA have rules against this?
Bibby to rox, ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Best chance we have is when his contract runs out in what, 2 years? As for Webber, just say NO. Bonzi, despite being a fat lazy turd, is the only semi-realistic option now that JVG is gone and the fact that he already has a contract (though you wouldn't know it judging by last season). If Adelman does indeed sign, maybe Bonzi can be persuaded to pretend to be someone he's not.
