If Hornets move, they could be called the Kentucky Colonels http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news/ap/20011022/ap-hornets-louisville.html Challenge for ya'll: what would be the WORST possible team name based on corporate sponsorship?
This topic came up a couple of weeks ago in the Arena thread and Jeff said that KFC could not influence the name of the team. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&postid=281724#post281724
Thanks for pointing that out, Johnny. I would say chances are very good that the Hornets, if they move to Louisville, would be the Colonels. KFC would be heavily watched by the NBA because there are all kinds of trademark issues at work. In fact, the NBA barred the Grizzlies from being renamed the Express when Fed Ex made the name change a condition of their buying the naming rights for a new arena. The NBA said explicitly that they do not want any real or perceived corporate sponsorships of NBA franchises because of the trademark issues at work. For example, if the team took the colors red and white and KFC owned naming rights to the stadium (they have discussed calling it the KFC Bucket - oh, GOD!), how would they keep the trademark issues separate? The team is a walking advertisement for KFC. The NBA is extremely picky about trademark infringement. It is a top priority for them because licencing has kept their profits increasing even as tv revenues and ticket sales have dropped. If the Colonels became a reality, there would be some very significant contract negotiations because the NBA still owns the name (they bought it from the ABA way back when along with all the other names) and would NOT want KFC controlling any kind of trademarks when it came to one of their teams. It could get interesting.
man, i've known about the "KFC Bucket" forever now...but i just cracked out laughing when I read that...
Sorry I missed the previous thread, but KFC Bucket is pretty d*mn funny. I wouldn't feel so bad about our uniforms if another team has to play in the KFC Bucket.
We need a 2nd franchise LA has 2 we should have 2: Spring Spiders? Galveston Mardi Gras? Houston Humidity? Sugarland Cubes? Houston Traffic? Houston Clippers? Houston Road Construction?
