As long as TV Johnny of TV Jewelery fame works in Sharpstown- a light still shines bright in the midst of struggle.
oh how i long for the days of nathan's phimsical whimsical, the only chik-fil-a in the city, and roman delight pizza (although i guess there is still one of those in the galleria).
Actually, you probably need to grow up there before YOU talk. In the 80's when Greenspoint was built, it was the largest mall in this part of the country. It retained that title until Willowbrook was built. Most of the neighborhoods surrounding it like mine, Hidden Valley and others were nice, middle class neighborhoods with families and kids. Was it River Oaks? No. But, it wasn't a bad area, nor was it a ****hole. Two 4+ star hotels were built within blocks of the mall. There were lots of business conventions held there until around 1990, when things started to go downhill. I lived there until 1992. By then, they had round-the-clock police presence in the area. Most people were stopped and ID'ed before they were let into our neighborhood. When my mom got re-married and moved out of the house she had been in since 1968, the area had rebounded. Many of the apartment complexes had been levelled. Business development spiked in the areas surrounding the mall as evidenced by the dozens of lunchtime joggers in my neighborhood in the mid 90's (the oval that went around our neighborhood was exactly a mile long). As usual, you decide to talk about something without really knowing what you are talking about and, as usual, someone has to remind the rest of the world that you are, quite often, full of crapola.
Man you brought back some memories. My mom used to manage a womens clothing store back in the 80's and we used to always go up there. I would play outside radio shack, then hit the arcade and phimsical whimsical. Always would eat at the pizza place. Man those were the days. Then **** just hit the fan!
Aw good old sharpstown. Glad I got to grow up there as a young lad. Yeah crime was horrible there, including my neighborhood which was actually one of the nicer parts of Sharpstown. But overall, even that neighborhood is a flat out dump now. I still keep in touch with my neighbors and its just gotten worse and worse. The park I used to play in everyday is now the local drug distribution point, not to mention people have been shot and stabbed there. And it seemed like everyone on my street got robbed at one point. Needless to say, my parents hightailed it ASAP and we moved to bellaire. Good choice on their part.
Really? I can guarantee that San Jacinto mall was bigger, and it was completed in 1983. You sure you want to go here? I love Houston history. And I'll take my beatings when, and if they are earned. That said, Greenspoint was never a good area to live. And I mean ever. Hell, Bellaire was considered a Houston suburb prior to 610.
Sorry about my l;ast post. I tend to be an ass. I'm always right, but I was far too arrogant. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ktsv2Pq3THk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ktsv2Pq3THk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
For those of you that like books about Houston history and politics, "Sharpstown Revisited: Frank Sharp and a Tale of Dirty Politics in Texas" by Mickey Herskowitz is a great read.
dude! flashback... also, when i got a bit older, Sharpstown was home to the city's only Dream Merchant. outfits for misfits...
You're slippin in your old age buddy. You need to change more than two words for it to be considered a new post.
for sixty years? that cant be right. greenspoint mall used to be one of the top malls in houston. that alone made it a good area for business. for years it was the only mall serving an area from champions up to the woodlands over to kingwood. I'd have to say it was one of the largest business districts serving North Houston, but the willowbrook area has developed and is still developing very quickly....greenspoint certainly isn't a big draw for families anymore, because of what Jeff mentioned.... too many crappy apartments around it now. they were good at building apartments i guess in the late 90's, but they weren't very successful in finding good occupants. Fatty, i'm not saying Greenspoint was filled with $500,000 houses and their mall was better than the Galleria, i'm just saying it was a nice area. i dont know what you define as a nice area...
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Golden Pot. #7 Bulgoki baby, you know you loved it Fatty. Don't forget playing Rampage at Yesterday's, with a side of Franky Eating.
What's the name of the place? I remember going to Sharpstown Mall as a kid for their 4th of July fireworks display, and getting stuck in the parking lot traffic for an hour afterwards. I also worked as a stockboy for the Foley's in Sharpstown Mall during high school. I haven't been to that mall in nearly 30 years.
Are you talking about IN Greenspoint Mall? I eat in that food court every Friday. What's the name of the place? There's one cajun place that ALWAYS has the biggest line, but I didn't think they did bbq. Speaking of Greenspoint, I was under the impression that they cleaned it up in the last 10 years. I've worked on Imperial Valley for 4 years and I can see the improvement in infastructure along with the increased police presence.
