Whats the worst basketball injury you have suffered?

Yesterday I took an elbow to the face and that got me a black eye, and 6 stitches underneath my eye.

Ive broken my ankle before (landing on someones foot) but that seems like nothing compared to a laceration for some reason...

I ran into the back wall of the gym palms first after a failed attempt to catch up to a breakaway, but the force of the collision broke my left elbow.

It's not as bad as it sounds, though -- there was almost no pain, no surgery was required, I didn't need a cast (just a splint and sling on my non-dominant arm), and there aren't any lasting effects.

(honorable mention: 2 sprained ankles, but not at the same time)

Depends on what your criteria are. Most damage, or most pain?

Most damage: Got run over by a truck named Andrew. Guy was from Hong Kong... 280 pounds (I'm about 165), all muscle, had never played basketball before... only Rugby. So he played basketball like it was Rugby, this being his first time. Well, he charged in for a rebound, and I got bounced off a wall, and landed real funny.
Now my chiropractor says my back looks like that of a 50-year old, and that I may need surgery in a year or two (I'm 22). Oh, and I can never play basketball again, either.

Most pain: Drove the lane, saw a wall of defenders in front of me. Took a jumper leaning waaaay to my left to avoid the block. Got my feet taken out by a guy running at me. Side of my head hits another guy in the shoulder on the way down, then my legs land on the first guy, and the back of my head takes the brunt of the fall. Owwwwwwww. Sooooo much pain. Dear god. My head's starting to hurt just thinking about it.

    And just for fun...

Most injuries in one game: These were mostly more funny than anything. In one game, I managed to get hit in the groin by a bad pass, catch an elbow to the side of the head, had my nose bloodied by an accidental headbutt, jam two fingers (they were purple for several days afterwards), and end with a sprained ankle (can't tell you how many of those I've had).

I could go on all night, but I suppose I should go sleep now... :D

I wonder if there is any face guard/helmet type things made for basketball. Not the Rip Hamilton thing, coz that doesnt look like it would stop an elbow.

I'm one of the few who's never gotten injured before and hopefully won't ever.. but I've gotten sick while playing. Does that count?

the worst for me is just a rolled ankle where i couldn't walk straight for a week. never broken anything.

the worst i've witnessed is Darkhorse's knee injury. from the outside, there was nothing to see. but when the injury happened, i could feel his pain. a naked knee meeting hardwood with all your weight, i could almost hear the knee break.

complete tear of the ACL, MCL and some other ligament in my right knee. was bringing the ball upcourt on a fast break, guy tries to steal the ball from me, I do a spin dribble. floor was sticky that night, right leg stayed planted while the upper half of my body did an almost complete 180.

was able to walk off the court surprisingly and even drove myself home. leg swelled up to almost twice its size when I woke up next morning.

Not to me, but in my experience coaching middle school and high school basketball...

Worst jr high injury...A kid on the opposing team was backpeddling trying to guard our fast break. He tripped all by himself, and he put his hands back to to avoid falling flat on his butt. He managed to break both arms at the wrist.

High school, at on of my practices, one of my players was guarding another and trying to cross the defender over and fly by, his teeth rammed into the other kids forehead. The defender had a deep gash across his forehead and we all know how head wounds bleed. The cutter knocked his front teeth loose and both were barely hanging on. The trainer had him bite down on a broom wrapped in a towel to set the teeth back in their place.

To me, I've been lucky. Broken thumb in practice digging at the ball teaching the guys "palms up when you dig". Worst part is I couldn't stop practice to tend to it. I didn't want the guys to be scared of digging at the ball. I had to wait until water break 45 minutes later.

The worst I've had was a dislocated shoulder. I was reaching out to pick off a pass and the force of the ball pulled my shoulder back. When I brought my arm forward the joint came out. For some reason I reached over with my other hand and slammed the joint back in place.. Then it really hurt.

The problem was that I had dislocated the same shoulder about a year earlier but at that time had a doctor put it back which didn't hurt. All I can say is if you dislocate a joint let a professional do it.

Elbow to the mouth chipped a small piece of my bottom left tooth (hardly noticeable), knee to the groin, jammed finger...nothing too serious

The sound of the knee hitting the floor was un-natural :(

Tore both ACLs, but tearing my Achilles was far worse. That was a brutal rehab -- long and painful.

None of the injuries occured on any violent plays, which made it all the more frustrating. In fact, there was no contact on either of the ACL tears. :(

The Achilles I tore while contorting my body and briefly running backward to catch an outlet pass. I think I might have come back too early from the most recent ACL tear, but the doc assured me that was not the case (maybe so I wouldn't sue them ;) ).
