Sorry I just heard him say this as he was pontificating on Iraq on Meet the Press and I thought this was the only thing that was at all interesting. Does he realize that neither North Vietnam's communist regime nor South Vietnam under Diem/various military coup governments had a functional democracy? If that is his model for success - wow.

lets ask diem how "democracy" worked for him. (he got what he deserved, imo, but after having the u.s. support he got hung out to dry)

mccain has really strung together a series of just flat out bizzare statements the last couple weeks from the 'bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb' iran song, to his comments regarding his stroll thru the baghdad market, to his "ill follow bin laden to the gates of hell"

it is obvious that he has some mental problems. sadly, he is still more electable than tranny giulianni.

its like the democrats in 04 - just setting up a bunch of looser candidates to clear the field for hillary.

McCain is toast. The "Straight Talk Express" in 2000 was him at his best, which for me wasn't that good anyway. The deliberate crossover appeal was a nice touch but I didn't feel McCain had the mentality to be the executive leader of our country. In posturing for 2008, he kisses up to the very same GOP establishment people he blew off last time. But it isn't working. Now he has nowhere to go. If he goes back to being a maverick I will lose all respect for the little integrity he has left.

The only thing keeping McCain in the race is his very weak competition.

I think some of his comments recently show the downside of the Straight Talk express. To be a good politician sometimes you need to think a little more about what you say but McCain has built up the strategy of saying stuff that is supposed to sound edgy and tough without really thinking about it through.

I believe John McCain has gone absolutely nutso since he ran for Prez in 2000, and he has no chance this year.

I think so too....I would not be surprised if he starts a war with Iran right after he gets elected as our president, god forbid

Wasn't he captured and tortured by Vietcong for like 2 years in Vietnam, I'd think that probably is one of the things that makes him wanna go to war all the time.

I was listening to some reporter who follows him and talks with him. In general the reporter was very complimentary of Mr. McCain, so it wasn’t any sort of ‘hatchet job’. In much kinder words he basically said that the war in Vietnam and his experience there (to do everything that all the people did and to loose) was so bitter that he simply can't accept the thought of loosing a war and will do literally anything to prevent it, perhaps to the point that he wouldn’t be particularly rational in making decisions.

So it may not drive him to go to war, but if this reporter can be believed it certainly affects the way in which he approaches the issue and that desperation to ‘not loose’ probably leads to him saying some of this stupid stuff.

Republicans are sort of weak on democracy. They shade toward oligarchy or rule by clerics, preferably wealthy ones.
