Sorry I didn't read every post in this thread, you know, I have to avoid the mud fights between our veteran Clutchfans :p . Someone please update VSpan's status here, any news about their conversations, Greek Clutchfans?

yeah world competition... In the WBCs he shot 35.8% from the field. People are b****ing that Van Gundy tried to turn him into a three point shooter- OVER HALF OF HIS FG ATTEMPTS IN THE WBCs WERE FROM BEHIND THE ARC! He shot 35.8% from the field in the WBCs. Against "foreign teams' (every team he played except for the US) he shot a combined 32% from the field.

Everyone says how great of a play maker he is; he was FOURTH in assists for Greece! FOURTH! Here were his stats:
    35.8% shooting from the field
    1.3 assists per game
    .67 assists to turnover ratio

What is so impressive about that?

These comparisons with Manu and Parker are insane. "Well they got a shot there first year so V-Span would've been great if he did too". That does not make any sense. That's like saying that Slavko Vranes would be just as good as Yao if he was given the same opportunity. V-Span, Ginobili, and Parker are all different players in different situations. With that said it is not accurate to claim that V-Span would turn out just like them if he was in the same situation. It would be similar to this:
2 weightlifters start working out at the same time. They both follow the exact same routine and follow the exact same diet. Will they both have the exact same weight gains? One could be genetically superior with regards to working out then the other.

Secondly, if you are gonna make the claim that V-Span could've been like Parker and Manu you have to compare the players. Let's just compare Manu and Parker when they were rookies vs V-Span this year:
Leaping Ability: Advantage Ginobili and Parker
    Quickness: Advantage Ginobili and Parker
Ball Handling: Advantage Ginobili and Parker
Jump Shot: Advantage Ginobili and Parker

Personally I feel that V-Span's potential for success would be similar to a genetically-inferior, skinny weightlifter versus a genetically superior broad shouldered lifter like Manu and Parker.

I'm just tired of hearing people demand that he gets minutes. He was the 50 something pick in the draft! Guys drafted that late would usually be thrilled just to make a roster! People always say "well you've got to try all your rookies out to see if they are any good".... honestly... what team plays every single one of its rookies? How many late second round picks even make their team's roster? They are very good players somewhere or another and had skill. Almost everyone in the draft has some sort've potential, but some players just obviously won't be that good.

If your gonna go to the silly comparison route based on nothing, look at previous #51 picks.

    2005- Robert Whaley
    2003- Kyle Korver
    2002- Federico Kammerichs
    2001- Alton Ford
    2000- Igor Rakocevic
    1999- Antwain Smith
1998- Corey Brewer (not Florida's Corey Brewer)
    1997- Chris Crawford
    1996- Chris Robinson Western
    1995- Dejan Bodiroga
    1994- Lawrence Funderburke
    1993- Spencer Dunkley
    1992- Tim Burroghs
    1991- Zan Tabak
    1990- Tony Smith
    1989- Mike Morrison
    1989- Robert Lock

Korver is the best play on that list and the only reason he turned out okay was because he had a skill that could be considered superior. His jump shots amazing. Don't even try to compare Novak's jay to Korver. Korver is much better at getting open and his release is incredible.

    Anyways, just look at V-Span:
    His jumper sucks.
He's an okay at best ball handler.
    He isn't incredibly quick.
    He can't jump that high.

He doesn't do anything good! He's okay at some things maybe but that's it! He was good in the Euroleague which really doesn't mean ****. I mean Lynn Greer scored 25 a game in the Euroleague!

That would mean something if he was playing in Greece, but he's playing in America where he was, at best, a 2nd round draft pick.

He was pretty much an unknown when he got drafted... It was before he played for PAO. Hadnt played in Euroleague, hadnt played in the ULEB cup, hadnt played major competitions with the greek NT.

hmm - what about Theodoras Papaloukas and Dmitris Diamantidis? 2 Greek PG-s who are Euroleague Final Four MVP-s in last 2 years?
But I'm agree with them, who think, that V-Span should get more PT

Larissa was A2 division. Noone pays attention to the A2 except greek A1 teams...

Marousi was not a major player in the A1... Span didnt get any recognition or PT in european competitions till he moved to PAO...Apart from the ULEB cup in 2005....He was only called to the Greek NT around that draft too

I didnt say he started playing basketball in 2004, just mentioned noone really knew who he was back then. I know what his career has been

Actually, Bodiroga is the best player on that list (and one of the best players in the world overall in basketball history). He just didn't want to play in the NBA.

Anyway, the Greek media are confident that Spanoulis will return to Greece... unless JVG leaves.

How do we get him to stay if things are so chaotic right now? Why would he even want to discuss it at this point? If he does make a decision he may end up screwing himself.

    I hadnt seen that ....

Bodiroga is arguably one of the best European players to ever play the game and almost unanimously the best player never to play in the NBA along with Nick Galis...

He has 2 world championships and 3 European championships and 4 euroleague titles along with numerous country championships and cups . He has more heart than any other player I've witnessed. In yugoslavia he is treated like a god with the famous famous chants in european courts of "I believe in one god, his name is Bodiroga" and "Sex Droga y Bodiroga" (figure that one out :p)

Hell, even at 34 he is probably far better than most of the Rockets roster.

I always wondered why Bodiroga never played in the NBA, I've seen him few times, but some of my friends who are serbs actually praised him like a god...

JVG would never play the guy.

And I love guys that step at different angles to get to the rim, that is off rythmn for most NBA players and a HUGE advantage.

His footwork is AMAZING and his step through move is reminiscint of a much quicker Kevin McHale, and that pass at about 2:35 is SICK SICK SICK !!!

A SF who's rights are owned by Sacremento, he could be pretty good with the right system and freedom to play.....

    Not with JVG of course.

for the record I have never bashed Rafer, check my post history on Rafer threads before you lump me into the entire clutchfans group against Rafer.

I think with Yao and Mac 100% + an upgrade at 4 and maybe the backup 2 (replace Head in the rotation) that Billy and Alston would be fine sharing min at point.

I feel lucky to have witnessed him on my team in greece for the 4 years he played for us.

The guys has so much heart he is an absolute legend with our fans.

He left PAO in 2002 and the first time he came back to athens as a member of the opposing team he was cheered more than PAO by the fans. Before, after and during the game. He made fast-breaks against PAO and the cheering was unbelievable. And this was not in an unimportant game. This was a game where we lost and that meant we had hardly a chance to get to the Euroleague final four.. Yet he was still cheered after the loss... I'm telling you...He played with so much heart noone minded as long as it was he that beat us....

There is an interesting article in greek press today with a lot of the stuff the fitness coach of Span's old team: Maroussi BC said about the rockets' work in terms of fitness, practice etc. and Span.

If any of you remember I had mentioned in an older thread that this fitness coach was invited by the Rockets to spend some time in Houston and some of the rockets' coaching team will spend some time in athens during the summer.

So it's basically a report of what he saw.. It's lengthy and I'm at work so I don't have time to translate it but I will later today so keep an eye out.

    Thanks
