Should MVP voting occur after the Playoffs?

Long ago, it made a lot of sense for the MVP to be solely based on the regular season. But half of the teams in the NBA go to the Playoffs each season. So here's the question, short and sweet: Should MVP voting not occur until the Playoffs? Fact is, the NBA Playoffs are where people step up their games. And as much as I love Kevin Garnett, if his team is not good enough to make it, he's not good enough to win an MVP (just using him as an example). So what do y'all think? And why or why not?

That's what the Finals MVP is for.

Ditto. it is called the MVP of the regular season, so the play offs should have no influence on it.

I think it should be the MVP of the season only -- although, in doing so, team records should have much less say on the MVP. I mean, obviously the MVP has to be on a competitive team and make the playoffs - but we all know, especially after last night's beat-down of Dallas, that regular season record means nothing come playoff time. Therefore Dirk winning the MVP (if he does) based on his performance but moreso the Mavericks success is a joke.

They should just announce it before the start of the Playoffs, so you don't have a situation like this year.

Mike and Mike compared Dirk to Karla Malone this morning, and that made me happy.

I think they should base it on the reg season but you have to make it to the 2nd round to win it. So give the award in the 2nd round to the player who had the best season that is still alive

History views MVP's as the player of the year. When it comes down to it, noone will talk about regular season killer, most valuable to the team, etc...30 years from now, the MVP will simply be regarded as the player of the year.

For that reason, MVP should be announced after the season...after the finals, after everything. Dwyane Wade deserves recognition for what he did last playoffs, and finals MVP is not enough.

Hakeem would be at least one MVP richer as well.

Um, even if they waited until the end, Barkley still would have deserved the MVP in '93. His Suns went all the way to the finals and took the Bulls to six games.

I think the whole idea of a bunch of biased writers voting for MVP is flawed, so I like seeing the current system. When Dirk wins MVP next week, we have to remember that it's not his fault, he just did his job and played well, the people that should have egg on their face are the ones that voted for Dirk, not Dirk himself.

really? i've never heard anyone call it that.

i get it in football and baseball.

but in basketball i don't get it. the playoffs are literally a second season. they stretch for nearly 3 months. and more teams are allowed in than kept out. the MVP should be just that....THE MVP. i don't think you can know that until after the playoffs end.

Dan Patrick had a skit earlier today where an NBA official was knocking on Dirk's door to hand him the MVP trophy. :D

Yeah, I'd sooner blame the writers who gave Dirk the trophy instead of Steve Nash than try to fix the system.

Personally, I think voting should take place after WCF/ECF. When you have several candidates so close in voting such as this year (Dirk, Nash, T-Mac), the playoffs can and should be what pushes an MVP over the edge. For instance: Steve Nash, with his 23 assists in one game, now would be a no-brainer for MVP. Dirk didn't show up the whole GS series, and T-Mac has had 2 bad nights (both of which were in Utah).

Since the MVP candidates are all going to be on playoff teams, it makes sense that they should be judged at the highest levels of play (i.e. against other MVP candidates in the playoffs). Anyway, there's my two cents.
