Do you think these guys will make good Coaches if given the Opportunity? I think so. They seem to have an understanding of the game and a personality I can see players being attracted to follow They ae simply Leaders Rocket River
Unclear, I would need to see how well spoken they are in talking about plays etc. I know they are intense but are they able to explain their concepts to players and get them to execute on them. Elie is probably more ready than Sam...... Sam still has some playing to do... DD
Just from watching them in the broadcasters booth it would seem that Sam has better communication skills and has a more alpha male mentality to take control over players. I know that may not translate to coaches but Sam also seems to have a better understanding of X's and O's over Elie as well. Elie seems a bit more passive. Maybe he'd be a better assistant coach. Oh wait wasn't he already?
isn't the purpose of the coach to wake up his players? with Elie's monotonic voice, i think players will all of a sudden become narcoleptic.
Dang, I came in this thread expecting tinman's "only Red Auerbach could even compare to them" post. How disappointing.
Have you guys heard John Lucas recently? I can't believe he was a NBA head coach. PS IIRC Lucas may have had some medical issues. If so, disregard post.
Mario has experience as an assistant coach with Golden State. Lets not forget Scottie Brooks and Chris Jent, both NBA assistants.
What did he sound like? (I ask because my dad is thinking about bringing him for an event as a main speaker)
Sam definitely, Elie maybe. I think Cuttino will be coaching in 10 years or so. (and in 10 years Francis will be viewed as Marbury is. )
im here to educate the newbs or YOFers.YOFers don't know about Mario , the player.. The defending NBA-champion Rockets entered the playoffs seeded sixth and were noticeably thin at the forward position due to the trading away of Otis Thorpe and an injury to Carl Herrera. But the Rockets upset expectations by defeating the Utah Jazz, the Phoenix Suns, and the San Antonio Spurs to win the Western Conference and enter the NBA Finals against the Orlando Magic. Elie's role increased as the team kept winning. In Game 7 of the conference semifinals at Phoenix he hit a crucial three-pointer in the waning seconds to give Houston the series victory. Then, during the Finals, Elie became the team's starting small forward, with Robert Horry moving to power forward. Elie responded with an outstanding championship series, logging 40.3 minutes per game and averaging 16.3 points on 24-of-37 shooting from the field (.649). He was 9-of-10 from the foul line and an instrumental 8-of-14 (.571) from three-point territory. In Games 3 and 4 he hit a combined 7 of 10 three-pointers.
I enjoyed his commentary on the local FSN channel in Houston, when I was there recently. The guy would be perfect for the Rockets bench. And if Jeff decides at some point (assuming we win this series and he's resigned) to hang it up and go back to TV, there's Mario, waiting to step in. They should do it!
These guys have the smart, they would be good assistants, I am not sure they are head coach materials. Sam can't actually talk that well. Mario talks with hands too much, it's really distracting looking at him.
This may be a little off topic.... weren't Sam and Mario planning on opening a fine Itallian shoe store in the galleria by the name of Samario's? I remember Elie saying something like that on the radio back when they both were on the Rockets.
yeah, that's why i wrote that up top.. they had that store. No clue if it's still open, but it was even after Sam was traded.
Sam and Mario as co-head coaches of the Houston Rockets- Both played on Championship teams, both are leaders ! Love to see them take over when jVg goes to New York!
