Has everybody forgotten that we can still get Jackson?

Most folks here seem to have forgotten that we can still get Marc Jackson. He hates Golden State, doesn't want to be there AND HIS CONSENT IS REQUIRED FOR ANY TRADE UP TO ONE YEAR FORM THE DATE HIS OFFER WAS MATCHED. I can not comment on behind the scenes plans, but allow me to speculate. The Rockets get Jackson and Tweedle-Dee for [insert Rockets player here] plus cash or another Rockets player. I'm not a capologist, but I think there is a forest through the trees here.

October 17, 2002 is not exactly what the BBS members had in mind.

To be honest, I feel the main reason for getting Jackson was this year alone. Once Mo comes back we start to have a crowd at power forward and center, and Jackson would be a little too pricey. Who knows how tall Griffin will be by next year, he could be our next center, and Cato the backup. I think it would be good for depth, but not a smart trade salary cap wise. We'd have too much money tied into our PFs and Cs. We will probably slide Rice over to PF a good amount of the time so Mooch, Steve and Cat can play together. The main goal of using the medical exception is to get a C/PF for this year. The reason why we gave Jackson such an obscenely long contract was in hopes they would not match it, not because we really wanted him that long. The more I think about it, the more I'm glad it fell through. A six year contract on a player with less than 50 games experience is quite risky. Hopefully we can find someone else short term, but I don't see any reason to trade for Jackson next year, unless he plays even better than last year, but then he probably wouldn't be up for trade. Anyway that I look at it, I don't see a point in thinking about getting Jackson next season. He would have been great to have for THIS year though.

I thought the main reason the Rockets got Jackson was to play the center position. Sure, this year he would have filled in as PF for Taylor, but when Taylor comes back I think they planned on Jackson being the starting center. I don't think they felt Cato or Collier was going to be the Rockets' center of the future, which I totally agree with.

And as for Eddie Griffin, I'm still waiting to see him play, but for some reason I always thought he was going to play SF in the NBA. His body type pretty much looks like Tracy McGrady. He can shoot from the outside and with the zone defense he could come down into the paint and block shots. When the Rockets "signed" Jackson I saw their future lineup being:

C: Jackson
PF: Taylor
SF: Griffin
SG: Mobley
PG: Francis

That would allow Griffin to exploit some major mismatches at the SF position. But now that the circumstances have changed he'll definitely have to be a PF this season. I can't wait to see him play!

DCkid,

I think Rudy plans to play Griffin at the 4 spot primarily. As he gets stronger and his body matures he may evolve into a 5. My guess is even this year he will play some 5 depending on matchups and need. Seems to me some skinny 6' 9" guy named Russell (with great instincts and shot blocking ability) figured out a way to play center pretty effectively .;)

And welcome to the board. :)

Can you trade for Marc in 90 days using a second team as a go between? Like a three team trade. Does that bypass the restriction of a year the Rocket's can trade for him? Just asking...I don't know?

The Rockets can not get MJ for at least 1 year from the matching of the offer sheet.

Golden State can not trade him for 90 days, but NOT to the Rockets.

In addition any trade over the next year would have to be approved by MJ.

Thanks, Da for saying that. The rules surrounding this part of the CBA are pretty explicit. Jackson cannot be traded to the Rockets at ANY TIME within a year of the time they signed him to an offer sheet and GS matches. Third teams cannot be involved either.

GS must wait 90 days before trading him, but if they do trade him, he can refuse to be traded to any team he doesn't want to play for. After 90, if Jackson agrees, he can be traded to any team in the league EXCEPT the Rockets where he simply cannot play (PERIOD) for one year.

Thanks for clarifying about him not being able to play for the rockets even if traded to another team first. I was well aware of the one year rule, but didn't know that part.

By the way, does anyone else think that GS matched because they'd be contributing to creating yet another team in the west that they couldn't beat out for a playoff spot? If MJ had worked out, he would have been both a valuable player and tradeable commodity. I bet that if we played in the East, they would have gone ahead and just let him go.

Hey,

So here's a thought. Why not trade for Jackson after 90 days?

Did you not read that we can't trade for Jackson for at least a year.

I for one am happy to see Griffin get more minutes. I would rather see Griffin playing than Jackson. We need more D not more O.

The Rocket knew Jackson at 6yr/24mil was too good to be true.

Just edited this. Somethings up with my computer because I couldn't see everybody's replies. BTW, where in the CBA does it say that the Rockets can't get Jackson. That is the first time that I have heard that one.

Just an FYI.. Those smiley faces represent "SARCASM"... I wish I didn't have to explain it, but my comment was a joke based on Jeff's/Behad's "bet" about someone posting again about acquiring Jackson after the 90 days..

Just wondering about the particulars of the CBA. The section of it I read on the subject said that GS can't trade him to us and no other team that acquires him can trade him to us. What if he was cut by Golden State (fat chance) and then picked up off waivers by the Rockets? Would that be allowed, do you think? Idle question, I know.

On Griffin playing PF & C: Rudy said a little while ago that he saw a trend in the league of becoming shorter and more athletic in the PF and especially C position. I think this is why he'd consider Griffin at center. He'll be a bit undersized but of a new breed of fast, athletic, skilled centers that are replacing the big and plodding breed (Shaq, Ostertag, et al).

I don't think this is correct. According to many posters, including Jeff, Crispee & Behad, Jackson cannot be a Rocket now until the 2002 season. I don't know jack about the CBA, but you can bet if those three have said something, I'm going to believe it.

CBA Article XI, Section 6, item f:

(f) After exercising its Right of First Refusal as described in this Section 6, the ROFR Team may not trade the Restricted Free Agent for one (1) year, without the player’s consent . Even with the player’s consent, for one (1) year, neither the ROFR Team exercising its Right of First Refusal nor any other Team may trade the player to the Team whose Offer Sheet was matched.
