    Guys,

I live in Austin, and am contemplating getting Digital Cable for the Rockets games.

My question is, does anybody already do this, if so, what is your Cable descramblers make and model number?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to know how to descramble a digital signal as well.

Nothing is impossible, but this is really hard.

In analog cable, everyone gets the signal whether they order the channel or not (for example HBO). A descrambler unscrambles the picture.

In digital cable, signals are only sent to specific converters by code. For example, if my box is Code A231 then Time Warner sends NBA League Pass to only A231. No other converter can get NBA League Pass besides A231. You can't unscramble something you don't get.

you mean the illegal ones? If so, send me 20 bucks a nd I won't call the police. :D

I had one of those, but my ex-gf's rommie stole it. I'd like to get one too.

To clarify, just becuz you have digital cable doesn't mean you will get the Rockets, right? You still have to buy league pass?

I don't think there is a such thing as a digital cable descrambler.

Yes, you have to have NBA League Pass to get Rockets games. Otherwise, digital cable sports is exactly the same as analog cable sports.

You can also buy one on Ebay, the issue is the Digital portion. What channels do these GRAY boxes get? Do they get the NBA league pass, or not?

I've done satellite installation for a while, and those of you who have satellite know that you have to insert a card to get it fired up. My old boss was connected to a guy who would get you a card that would unlock everything. Everything. It can be done.

It depends on what you are asking. Did your Dad pay for basic cable service? If yes, then there is no way they can know you have a descrambler. If no, then of course they can find out.

Cable companies regularly check neighborhood boxes (the big green things you see on the side of the street sometimes) and take readings of signal strength. If people are illegally wired the cable company will know.

You can also buy one on Ebay, the issue is the Digital portion.

Descramblers are widely available. Digital descramblers will eventually come out but it will be very expensive. And I'm sure cable companies will find out because the signal is digital. Anyone intercepting a signal meant for someone else will be in trouble.

With a DirecTV descrambler everything is descrabled. EVERYTHING!

The difference is that digital cable boxes do not need cards. I know that Direct TV and Dish Network customers can buy "thug cards" that descramble all the channels but that is impossible with digital cable.

Something should come out in the near future for digital cable. If you visit any descrambler website, they will tell you that there is no descrambler for cable companies using Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 or 2001. If they do then you better get a refund if it doesn't work.

The thing I don't like about my cable service is that I have to leave the cable box on the channel I want my VCR to record from. That prevents me from recording Enterprise and West Wing when I'm out on Wednesday evening because they are on different channels.

The VCR will come back on at the appropriate time, but it will record whatever is on the station the cable box is on.

This kills my plans to get a TiVO.

    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Buy a splitter for a couple of bucks. Connect the VCR to a co-ax directly. Should be able to record basic cable channels that way but not premium.

If you have a digital cable box they usually have RCA outputs (the red/white/yellow cable). Hook that up to the VCR input so you can record the premium stuff too.

Thanks. Good Idea. So there's nothing I can do about the other channels though unless I leave the box on the channel?

SciFi, TBS, ESPN and the like?
