If he was unhappy about his role in Houston...well, why'd he leave Utah? He'd probably be the starting 2 man for them now, with all the PT and touches he could possibly want. Ah yes, 'lifestyle'. I guess he only has himself to blame.
And when Shandon did get the ball, he didnt do sh*t with it. He can't dribble, he can't create his own shot. Why do you want the ball...
Also, does anyone know the question Shandon was asked, or do you not care about context? Who needs context when you want to blast someone? People attack Cato because he doesn't put forth effort. They say "if he just tried, that's all we ask". Well, Shandon puts forth 100% effort, so people can't bash him for that. So now they use "well, he sucks!" as their excuse. People like to bash ex-Rockets or near-Rockets -- they'll make up the reasons if necessary. Funny how people are laughing that Webber is hurt for a few weeks, seemingly forgetting that the player we picked instead of him is out for the season.
Look Shandon played hard, but the truth is he is NO BETTER now then when he signed with Houston. He did not become a better shooter, or dribbler. He is a good backup...that is it. I think SA is a nice guy, but he is not the answer, and I for one, am glad he is not on our team anymore. I wish him well, as he is pure class, but the man can not shoot or dribble the ball better then my 3 year old. DaDakota
so...if a doctor botches your surgery but is a nice guy does that make up for it??? sad to say but the truth...in sports the only thing that matters is results... shandon=no result...or resultst that suck... as for people laughing at webber, im glad in a nonrude way when someone on another team gets injured casue most of the time it means that they won't be as good and thus helping the rockets... as long as the player isnt a former rocket...quitten doesn't count...
I'm gonna side with the dissenting opinion on this one. I agree with just about everything Shandon says in this article. Throughout last season, I'd make observations on times when Shandon would run the fast break, but NEVER be rewarded with the pass. His point total (as well as shooting percentage) would have improved, had his teammates looked at him in transition. Shandon was always a great transition player, and knew how to finish a fast break ... the Rockets never exploited that. For one reason or another, he just didn't fit in well with the Rockets. I still harbor lots of respect for him, and wish him well with the Knicks. No ill will here.
There were times that I really enjoyed watching Shandon and I always knew he was capable of good production. But that made it all the more frustrating to watch when he would miss countless perimeter shots or was unable to handle the ball on the break, or when he'd just flat out miss easy shots. I'd be ok with him if he was still on the team. But he really hasn't gotten better in the last several years (even since he left Utah). No improvement? You don't have to go home, but you have to get the hell out of here. Enjoy the Big Apple.
Brilliant reply. Shandon is a mediocre basketball player. It doesn't matter who he plays with, he will never be more than that. Even in Utah, he was nothing more than a mediocre player who filled the exact role that the team needed. On the Rockets, despite what people say about his defense (ask Kobe about his defense), Shandon did not fill a role we needed (which is rebounders and front court players). The Rockets won 45 games last year by passing to Shandon less.
I wonder what poor J-impaired shandon will accomplish offensively in a half-court bump and grind offense that never runs like van gundy's... his strenghts as a finisher and slasher are of almost no use to a team like the knicks. good luck to him. i'm sure he will end up struggling more over there than he did with the rocks. Sprewell and Houston will sure as hell not defer to him.
If Shandon's numbers go up in ny . .u know what that says about houston? IT SAYS WE SHOULD HAVE HAD HIM COMING OFF THE BENCH!! Playing against the second unit or a tire 1st unit is not = starting I like Shandon. . . I wanted shan to stay but not as a Starter In the opening of the game I want INSTANT OFFENSE 30 pts in the 1st quarter . . . . the defense is kewl . . sometimes u need instant offense off the bench but i think i team needs Defensive stopper off the bench we *got* fire power. I wish him well Rocket RIver
I went through my tape collection and did find a lot of what Shanndon was saying true. Francis and Mobley did play a lot of buddy ball. I really don't blame those 2 for being able to get their shot off anytime, i think some of Anderson's failure goes to Rudy's offense. I don't think anyone like the iso's, but it put the ball in the hands of the best players for houston. When i used to watch Anderson play for Utah, he got points in transition, post up, and garbage points, thats his strong suit. His strength isn't spot up three's, maybe every once in a while, but not all the time. I think Rudy makes some of his atheletic players 1 dimensional. Just like anderson and Pippen, ouch! The same thing happened when Pippen was here. Rudy would have him chillin around the arc waiting for a kick out for three which wasn't his strength either. For some reason, Rudy will be more succesful with spot up shooters than slashers. When I watched the game tonight, i noticed Morris standing beyond the arc a lot also. I wish we could run something similar to the triangle so we could get more movement and more mid ranged shots as opposed to all those 3's. Shanndon was right in a sense, but he's gone now and we can move on.
I remember Shandon missing wide open 3s on the break and on screens. What is he complaining about? He should be thankful he got the ball. He was paid a lofty amount to put the ball in the whole. What was his shooting % anyhow for the time on the Rockets??@?2
Maybe we would have been happy if he forced more shots up even though they weren't good ones. His shooting % is better than Cats, but thats not saying much.i pulled out some random tapes in my collection and I know i spot 4 or 5 chances he could have been given to score. I know they didn't do it on purpose, they were just used to looking for each other. He's a role player and nothing more. When we brought him here, we had intentions of having a lineup of Francis,Anderson, Pippen,Barkley, and Hakeem. With a lineup like that it wouldn't have been a problem for him to score 8-10pts and we win, but that summer we had to get pip the hell on, Chuck got hurt, and Hakeem missed most of the season also. Anderson wasn't brought here to be the star, he was brought in as a support.
Unfortunately, Houston had no idea what to do with Shandon. They just saw how much he had kicked ass while in Utah and thought 'Wow, we need that guy.' I remember a Charles Barkley appearance on Monday Night Football a few weeks before they signed him, talking about how the Rockets are going to for sure win 60+ games, "Especially if we get that Shandon kid." Well, you guys all expected Shandon to be some guy who runs the floor and spots up to shoot, or drives to the hole. While Shandon can do all those things, that's not where his best point is. Here you have a 6'6 guy who can post up 2 guards. That is a powerful weapon. It confuses the hell out of defenses when you have a small guy in the block and a big guy on the perimeter. You can't take a guy like this, and just send him out on the weak side arc and expect him to be happy just sitting out there. He is not Steve Kerr. He does more than shooting the longball. However, since Shandon is not exactly the most loyal basketball player in the league, I will stop defending him. My point was simply that Houston takes good players and turns them into spot up shooters. Nice job Rudy. *cough*
Rice for Anderson, duh. Think Steve and Cat will pass to Rice. Hell, Torres looks a hell of a lot better on the offensive end and easily as good on D and he seems to get in the flow way better than Anderson. And it's a few games into preseason. Good riddance
