COY has nothing to do with playoff success or lack thereof. All of the NBA season awards (ROY, MVP, COY, DPOY) are based on season performances only. iirc, all the ballots have to be in before the playoffs even start. the delay between then and when they announce is to give them time to tabulate the votes and setup the awarding ceremonies in each city.
