it should not be surprising that it was a diverse crowd

    from wiki:

Houston is a diverse and international city, in part because of its many academic institutions and strong biomedical, energy, manufacturing and aerospace industries. According to the U.S. Census 2000, the racial makeup of the city was 49.27 percent White, 25.31 percent Black or African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 5.31 percent Asian, 0.06 percent Pacific Islander, 16.46 percent from other races, and 3.15 percent from two or more races. Thirty-seven percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The Hispanic population in Houston is increasing as more immigrants (illegal or otherwise) from Latin American countries look for work in Houston. The city has the third-largest Hispanic population in the United States. It is estimated that about 400,000 immigrants reside in the Houston area illegally.[6] This influx of immigrants is partially responsible for Houston having a population younger than the national average.

Houston also has large populations of immigrants from Asia. In addition, the city has the largest Vietnamese American population in Texas and third-largest in the United States.[7][8]

interesting observation. I haven't lived in Houston since I was in Jr High School (over 22 yrs ago). And that is pretty much the last time I've really interacted with Indians/Pakistanis. But I remember growing up, my best friends were pretty much Pakistanis as they predominated my neighborhood (apartments on Reims near Sharpstown Mall). Nice people, nice parents and families, and even back then I remembered they loved Houston sports.

New York City has multiple Chinatowns. 3 that I know of.

    Toronto has a large Chinatown.

    San Fran definitely.

    Houston's is great, too.

But yeah, I know a lot of Asians are Rockets fans! :D

hell yeah, Houston has a ridiculous brown population. i'm Indian & Muslim, and I can tell you that, for some reason, most desis - from A&M, UT, and UH - just kinda pick basketball over everything else. it's what we predominantly play at our respective school gyms, and it's the sport that we pay to watch live. we may play Madden more than any other video game, but, i assure you, we give more of a **** about Yao than we do Roger Clemens or David Carr/Mario Williams.

Damn, I didn't think there were that many Indian Rocket fans because when I lived in Houston there weren't.

    I'm not alone. :D

everytime I have been to a game inthe last five years, the crowd seems really diverse.

thats a good thing, the ROckets bring all races together in a common love...aint no one looking at what color your skin is when you are going nuts and high fiving everyone in arm range. ;)

Ask him what his criteria is... is it pure square footage of the area where chinese stores are? Is it population? Is it population per square foot? Is it number of different asian-owned businesses?

I certainly fit the bill of being a big jackass ...at least I do my best. Glad you noticed. ;)

For the record, this thread is in no way contraversial. Being "polictically correct" doesn't mean you ignore all things race related. Being "politically correct" means that you don't say stupid $hit when you have no idea what you are talking about (ie...Imas). Since the thread starter is simply talking about his own people, it can't really be politically incorrect ...as evidenced by the fact that several others have responded in kind.

Did he mean per square footage, cause Bellaire is a long street. The predominatly Chinese/Asian part of Bellaire extends from Gessner to Wilcrest.

I'm Indian and Muslim. 99.9% of Indians and Pakis I know are into basketball. At our mosque, everybody and their mom will know Yao, Tracy and Hakeem. Nobody gives a rats ass about Clemens, Biggio, Carr, etc.

Went to Cafe Layal after the game and it was a like a Rockets after party. Everybody was in red.

No Indian is complaining - why turn this into an issue?

FYI - Most indians still call Mumbai "Bombay". It's clear which one sounds cooler.
