The Chron headline mentions Barry but the article has nothing from him.

Barry, Smith, Barkley cutting Rockets no slack

    By DAVID BARRON
    Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

Rockets alumni Jon Barry on ESPN and Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley on TNT are not inclined to cut their former team much slack as the NBA playoffs begin. If anything, they'll come down hard on the team if the Rockets don't advance at least to the second round and beyond.

Smith, in fact, doesn't even want to talk about the possibility of Tracy McGrady being entitled to a sense of accomplishment if his team advances for the first time in his career to the second round. Anything less than two or more series victories, he said, represents failure.

"This is the year they need to get it done," Smith said. "Getting out of the first round is not a big accomplishment. You either get that done or this is not the situation we thought it was.

"They talked about how they needed the pieces to fit with Tracy and Yao Ming, and they've got the pieces now. Is it good enough? We'll see. They shouldn't be thinking about the first round. They should be thinking about being contenders."

Barkley also is prepared to turn the spotlight full bore on McGrady's ability, or lack thereof, to carry the Rockets deep into the playoffs.

"I think there's more pressure on Tracy McGrady than on any player in the playoffs," he said. "If they don't get past the first round of the playoffs this year, it's not going to be a gorilla on his back, it will be like the whole Houston Zoo. I'm not trying to be unfair. That's how it is."

That's one Barkley line worth hearing.

kenny smith doesn't have a clue. the rockets have all the pieces? is this a joke?

    1. compared to the other 3 elite teams in the west the rockets clearly have a talent disadvantage.

    2. if the rockets win in the first round they'll probably face a mavs team that has won 67 and would have even easily won 70 games if it would have kept the focus for 82 games. plus, they have the mvp and were in the finals the last year.

the way it looks until now this season would be a huge success if the rockets beat utah in the first round and make it an interesting series against the mavs. that would be an achievement and there is no doubt about. sure, every fan wants the rockets to win it all but to say it's failure if this rockets team which is not nearly perfect loses as an underdog in round 2, that's just pure dumbness or insanity. period.

I think they just threw in Barry's name in the article  I've heard him say time and time again, that the rockets will defeat dallas and san Antonio.Jon is a disciplined individual and would never betray the hand that fed him :)

why put all the pressure on tmac? if its true that they think we have all the pieces, then the pressure should be on tmac, yao, and jvg

First and foremost, i think it's pretty cool that these former great NBA players share their opinions as analyst's and have a history with the rockets.

but yeah, they wont cut any slack becuz they're job is to state their opinions and not show favoritism.

as for barkley commenting on mcGrady's ability...he needs to consider the back problems which i think he may be overlooking.

as for my opinion on McGrady's ability: he is a dominant intelligent player. But sometimes just sometimes can you feel the loss of confidence when he starts missing a lot of shots? His confidence is what will determine our path the most.

If T-Mac can be fearless...or if he can utilize his fear and turn it into something positive for the team...we'll go far this year!

I have absolutely no problem with any these guys said in fact I back them up. Do I think we will win the championship? No but that should be the ultimate goal instead of just concentrating on getting past the first like we should and believe we will. IF healthy the Rockets can be as good as anyone, no doubt in my mind, T-mac and Yao are both that special kind of players, expectations should be very high. But we don't win any kind of trophy or metal for getting past. They say all this crap about experience in the playoffs but didn't Dwayne Wade lead the Heat to the championship without getting past the first round before that. Our players and coaches need to step up and play Rockets basketball, make adjustments when needed. This team is built for playoff success now it is time to show it.

He has the right to say it because he was on those teams. Doesn't matter if he was one of the mismatches teams abused or he had Sam to bail his ass from time to time.

These guys might be giving tough love, but they're laying it on too thick with the media, imo.

you cannot underestimate the experience in the playoffs. that miami team had shaq, payton, zo, walker ,....and I still do not know how they could beat dallas.

Well said, everything will have to allign perfectly for the Rockets to go all the way. The supporting cast is probably the least impressive among the West's elite. I will consider a first round victory a successful season. Then the Rockets need to get busy coming up with help at the PG and PF positions.

In any round we will be putting the best 2 man combination on the floor....the Rockets DO have enough to win.

The team is talented enough and contrary to popular belief has enough players to win any series.

I agree that no quarter should be given, there are no excuses, this is the playoffs, win or go home.....

Best man wins, tough it out.....

Let's see what kind of men we have..........strap it up boys........

I love how even though we are all rockets fans and some homers we start disaggreing when they say were so good we have to take the next step.

The usual flip-flop, nothing new to see. We were "garbage" in the middle of the season, now after a few impressive wins and HCA, all of a sudden, those "experts" "BELIEVED" all along that this the year we MUST get it done? WTF?

How old are they? Are their memory really that short? Just like the comments around Yao Ming, most of the "experts" labeled him as a bust before seeing him play, but after a 20-10 season, all of a sudden, same group of "experts" "BELIEVED" all along that he would be something special? They were complaining that his 20 points are not "dominant points"?

I am really worried about the hype around the team now, fans and those garbage experts all talking about second round or WCF, as if Jazz will just roll over and die. Remember, the 4th quarter is the weakest for Rockets, but the strongest for Jazz. Yes, we are a better team, but we still need to play better. I love being the underdog. Hopefully JVG can prepare them better this time for this hype from "expert bandwaggoner", unlike 2 years ago.

most people are this, even people on this board. first they said tmac sucks in the beginning of the season and wanted to trade him. then when yao went out, they loved him. then when yao came back, wanted to trade him. now they love him.

this is sports for ya -> what have you done for me lately? rox have been good lately so everyone is on their balls. when they lose again, everyone's going to say, i said so and that's why i always had my hesitation (right charles? :D )

Rudy should come back and host some Tony Robbins like seminars through the playoffs.

The truth is, we need at least one role player to step up every game. Doesn't have to be the same guy, but one guy has to seize the role of 3rd option...especially if Skip is bricking it up.

This is how it is. After getting paid so much, the only excuse these players have is injuries. If they can play, these 2 should atleast win 2 series. Anything less is a failure, especially considering half the teams gets to the playoffs.

Getting to the playoffs is nothing to boast about. If they are not one of the top 4 teams at the end of the season, they are underacheiving. That is it. No matchup excuses like the Suns. They should win. Screw Dallas, we took them to game 7 with a ****ty team. We can beat them this time. Its not like we are Boston or Memphis. We have two legit candidates for the HOF if they keep working at it. We should win.
