http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgJE7C5wiU Not sure if this has been posted but check it out around time 445-540...apparently it was the crease in the corner that let stern know what to pick....im not too sure..
Here's Bill Simmons' comments about this video: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/blog/index?name=simmons
im not real sure either......although it is curious how stern kind of flips the envelopes around when hes picking out the first one.
And best of all Ewing never gets a ring and in his closest chance ever his college rival, one Hakeem (Akeem) Olajuwon is the one who stops him. All the other times a UNC grad playing in the Second City keeps the door shut. How's that for the Ewing New York Era.
Hmmm, I dunno. While banging that 4th envelope against the drum is fishy, I don't know the other envelopes wouldn't have gotten similar creases when the drum was rotated. Maybe because he banged it on the corner instead of directly on its side.
as much as i would LOVE to believe there's a conspiracy here, i really don't see the fix. if stern had held his hand in there longer like he was looking for a dent than i'd buy it, but he pretty much pulled out the card immediately.
If it was really a conspiracy, why wouldn't the crease just be there beforehand...without having to bang it on the drum for all to see (though it wasn't really "banged"...kind of an overstatement if I've ever seen one).
Christ. They were the third-worst team in the NBA that season. The first-worst two tied for the worst record, and the Knicks had the worst record after that. Four teams with the worst record have won the lottery since 1985 -- are all those fixes?
Re-watched it, and it saddens me that someone who knows as much about pro basketball as Bill would resort to 1990-era radio chat show tripe. He's so friggin' good. He doesn't need this.
With the way they did THIS particular draft lottery, it didn't matter what team had the worst record. Each team had one envelope so each team all had the same chance to win the first pick. So all that worst record talk has nothing to do with this being fixed. Doesn't it seem odd how Stern goes to grab the envelopes, flips three envelopes over and goes for the one on the bottom (kind of like he knew what he was doing). Seriously, he easily could have grabbed the first enveloped he touched, no need to move the cards around once your hand in already in the drum.
No. (I mean, ---- New York. But ... no. Seriously. Does anyone believe that this was the best way fix a draft/pro sports league?)
But that kind of makes the conspiracy lose legitmacy.. the creased envelope was under 3 other envelopes so how would he be able to see the crease as he picks out the envelope? He wasnt fishing his hand around there very long at all to be able to locate and pick a specifically creased envelope. Also, how is everyone so sure that he was looking? The camera wasn't on his eyes at the moment he drew the #1 envelope. There are alot of problems with this conspiracy theory if you ask me...
When Stern gives the logo square dealy thingie to blessenhemmenheirssen (whatever his name is), he holds it with the bent corner on his forearm, and when he gives it to him, he tries not to make it look like it has something bent, but the old dude keeps holding it at a flat angle to the camera, and the camera catches the bent corner.
No. They either flip when they're on the way down and fall with force weaker than when the dude banged the Knicks' one, or they stay together and don't flip at all. I still think the size of those envelopes is too dang silly. Let me pull out a HUGE card, so that the camera can see it... EDIT: smoothie, your signature is incorrect.
i'll have to watch it again. ...and the prediction in my sig would've been correct if yao didn't go down. we would've passed the spurs and played the suns in the 2/3 series.
I was thinking the same thing...Although, one could argue that the crease would get bigger as it tumbles...Yes there is a noticable crease and yes I think some crap is rigged... btw, I love your sig...
yeah i think if it was a conspiracy they would have done a more elaborate job rather than the old creased corner trick made popular by drunk friends playing poker
