I caught this summary from another board. apparently NBA Coast to Coast was discussing coaching jobs for next year and JVG's isn't secure especially if we lose in first round (according to the hosts) Anyone else seen the show last night?
I don't give a flying f*ck what they say on coast to coast. if we win the first round and make it a series vs dallas, lose or not jvg will be the coach next season. we lose in the first round, or look like trash in the second -- they may be right.
forgot to add, apparently most of the discussion was because of Morey. again, i cannot confirm. anyone saw this?
I saw it and Ric Bucher who mentioned it said it was a non story that was a result of JVG pending extenstion but that if JVG wants to stay he'll be able to.
We will get out this time and going all the way to the final. I just feel it again this year. Jeff will not get Coach of the Year award but he will get the ring that count more.
"If he wants to stay"? Does that mean if he leaves it's a Parcells kind of thing, being tired of coaching and losing?
i think that if JVG leaves, its b/c he wants to and not b/c he was not wanted. He's said before (paraphrasing of course) that if he feels that he isnt doing this team enough justice than he would step down to allow the rockets to get someone else who could do more. Its actually refreshing b/c we dont have to worry about having a coach that hangs on for too long after he losses his effectiveness. I think that jvg believes that this team could/should be a legit contender and that would entail getting into the second ronud and at the very least, giving the mavs (assuming) all they can handle.
I assume but I Ric Bucher was just stating that if for some reason JVG decides to leave it'll be his decision. Also lets not over blow this, it was talked about for about 2 mins and Bucher called it a non story
It's no secret that JVG is doubtful to be back with the team if we flop in the first round once more. I don't think that's going to happen so I do believe he will be our head coach for a few more years to come. He's a good coach, I understand that not everyone is crazy about him but it would be difficult to find a better fit for this team, especially someone who can motivate and coach Yao and McGrady the way he has.
I don't doubt for a second that JVG will be back. He holds this team together and doesn't let slackers interfere. He commands so much from his players and holds them 100% responsible ALL of the time. His ability to teach defense is second to none, and is developing a more offensive mind. I think JVG will be back next season, regardless of playoff results.
Playoffs require a good bench, especially if the other team has one. Rockets first 5 can play with anyone as long as they are hitting and stay out of foul trouble. Problem of backup at point and macGrady getting tired and taking bad shots can close in on them. They simply need another shooter. Not sure they will make it out of the first round.
Problem with that is there's no coach on the hotseat good enough to replace him. Unless we like kidnap PJ or something, JVG is going to have to be the best option over the summer, no matter how we do.
Someone with knowlege of JVG's contract help me out. Doesn't he have a team option on the current contract for next year? I would bet a lot that he's back next year, regardless of situation. If the Rockets make significant noise in the playoffs (which they will ), he'll sign an extension. If not, the Rockets will simply exercise his option (that I think he has).
Morey said that "Everything will be evaluated in the offseason." Not sure how Bucher got this "job security" story from that but I believe that is the quote he was responding to.
I think, frankly, how the p/o's play out will determine the fate of JVG...and Lawrence Frank. Both out in the 1st then JVG heads towards Brooklyn.
Phil Jackson also has not discussed his contract extension with the Lakers. So he will be available at the end of the season. If JVG leaves, Phil would be the only one better than JVG.
