Not for me... for someone else.

Setting up a LinkSys WRT54G using Road Runner and we can't get the router's setup to find the "internet" and we're using the setup program that comes with the router.

What is the TYPE OF CONNECTION to tell the LinkSys router to use? Do I use DHCP (Automatic), Static IP, PPPoe, or what? It's a basic Road Runner home connection.

On the step after setting up the password for the router, it goes through the "Setting up your system" progress bar, gets to 100% several times, and then it returns with an error "Router is not able to connect to the Internet. Try turning the modem off..." :(

I know there is a connection from the PC to the router, since I can get to the default web administration page. I know that the Internet reaches the router, since I can see the "internet" light blinking on the router (or is it lying to me?)

Additionally, if we unplug the cable from the back of the router coming from the cable modem and take the router out of the equation, we can get INTERNET connection.

What else can I try? Dang RR.com doesn't help.

I have my router setup on the internet port (modem) as PPPoE and on the LAN port as static because I want to assign my own IP, but that can be setup as dynamic. The PC's IP must be configured the same way also, whether you set it up to DHCP or have static IP.

if you're using Road Runner I'm going to assume its DSL not cable modem that the router is connected to.

You should have your Internet Connection Type as PPPOE.

Remember to enter in the username and password provided by RoadRunner.

You'll also need to make sure that DHCP under the Network Setup portion of the sscreen (lowest portion) is on

and remember to save before closing.

I have the same router and RR as well.

    1) Plug your computer into your router.

    2) Plug your router into the cable modem.

    3) Don't bother with the setup CD. Browse to http://192.168.1.1.

    4) You should be prompted for a login. Blank username and the default password should be 'admin'.

    5) Find "Internet Connection Type" on the first page that loads up. You should select "Automatic Configuration - DHCP"

    6) Save Settings, let the router restart, and you should be good to go.

If I remember correctly, PPPoE is generally used for DSL and Road Runner is cable?

If your using RoadRunner ( Cable ) all you have to do is unplug the Cable modem.. Your Cable modem right now is registered to deliver signal to a specific MAC Address which is your computer and not the router.. If you unplug the Cable modem ( Power ) and power back on it will recognize the new MAC address ( Router ).. And make sure your router has DHCP enabled..

    Hotballa RoadRunner is Cable...

Let me know how it goes.

Or you can clone your Mac address in the Linksys Admin section.

Thank you. :) I was just about to post that it is a CABLE MODEM connection with RoadRunner and not DSL. And may I add, it's a SOUTH HOUSTON lucky punk I am assisting. ;)

I knew I could go straight to the config default ip web server, and I knew I had a connection. It may already be working, for all I care, since I got a call earlier that the connection was good.

Also, when we set up the initial password for the router, we did a push action on the reset router instead of pushing it for 30 seconds.

Thank you, dudes. I will try your suggestions tonight if it is still not working.

I ran into a problem this morning. Moving out of my apartment into a smaller apartment, its only .3 of a mile away, and AT&T tells me that I can't have DSL there. Its too far from the Central Office. me and my gf will be moving into a garage apartment of a new house her parents are moving into.

What other choices do I have for broadband? Is it possible to have RR and not have TWC???? I believe her parents have Directv, not sure about their internet.

oh please God say it isn't so. I currently have DISHnetwork, will still have it when I move. Don't think they offer internet via sattelite, and all the other companies are SO damn expensive. This is becoming a nightmare!

Have RoadRunner service without Time Warner Cable? If your asking if you can have RoadRunner service without subscribing for Time Warner Cable (T.V.) Service then the answer is yes. That is what I have. Oh and if you happen to slip the Cable guy 25 dollar he can hellp you get the basic cable for free :) **** Which by the way is wrong and illegal you should not do it ***** RR service can only come on if Basic Cable service is turned on. But you will be only charged for RR Service...

    UPDATE:

We did a 30-second push on the reset, which worked better than just a "poke" of the reset button. We started from scratch. We got the same message, but this time we just waited longer to reset the cable modem. It wasn't doing anything through the SETUP CD, so I did what yc324 suggested. I already knew about the admin site, so we did everything there. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, it worked! I was all . I advised to only use the admin site and to create a secure key an do the MAC restriction and all that.

Anyway... with that fixed, now our problem is with another computer in the same house, using a D-Link USB adapter DWL-122. The machine won't start the wireless utility or recognize the adapter as new hardware. We ran the update from the support DLink dot com site, and it ain't working. The light on the adapter is on. We tried different USB ports on the PC, but to no avail. :( What else could be wrong on the 2nd PC?
