man, apparently i haven't been properly appreciating michael ruffin's scrubbiness all these years. nor jason collins. from looking at PER i knew collins was amazingly good at doing nothing, but actually seeing the raw numbers on the game log is just staggering. how do you start 75 games and play 23 mpg and have 169 points on the season? kobe scored more than that in one 3 game stretch. not only that, but that december 26th outbreak is the only double digit game of his season! 1 10+ point game in almost 80 games when you play half the games is almost impossible. even better, he hasn't scored in their last 5 games despite getting 24 minutes per game and has 1 point in their last 8 games. his PER stands at 3.29, and i can't remember seeing anything even close to that before. what does he do out there? you almost have to purposely avoid doing anything to not hit a basket in 8 games and about 200 minutes of court time and have a PER of 3. you should be able to just accidentally tip one in or be the recipient of a pass for a dunk or something.
Manute Bol was the first one I thought of when I saw the thread title. (He's 3rd on durvasa's list.) But Jason Collins is worse in that he brings no measurables to the court. How does a 6'10" guy get only 1 rebound per 10 minutes?
Chris Dudley was the worst shooter I ever saw bar none, though he scored more than some on the above list, especially on putbacks since he was an aggressive offensive rebounder. That was his range, 2 feet and in. He once shot 0-13 from the free throw line in a game, with 7 of the misses being air balls. It was Hack a Dudley night. info: http://en.allexperts.com/e/c/ch/chris_dudley.htm
Collins is indeed amazingly bad on offense. I think the Nets keep him on the team, and even start him because of defense. Over the last few seasons, Collins has had pretty damn good +/- numbers because of some possibly massive, undefined impact he has on team defense. He's a horrible rebounder, and not a particularly good shot blocker, but he could be doing all the little things that don't show up in the box score. That said, according to 82games.com his adjusted +/- numbers for last season (taking into account the teammates he plays with) show that he still probably has a negative impact. But then again, New Jersey isn't exactly blessed with talented big men.
I think Collins's shockingly low numbers might be his team intentionally keeping him out of the offense. Throughout his career, his TS% and turnover rate have been horrible. I wouldn't want him shooting either if I was his coach. This season, his usage rate (number of possessions he finishes per 40 minutes) is 6.5, almost HALF of Battier's already extremely low usage rate. His TS% is a career low 41.2, and his turnover rate has skyrocketed to a career high 22.5 (which means that over 1 in 5 of his used possessions is a turnover), which is about 2nd worst in the league. So due to his absolute ineptitude on offense, he doesn't even make use of his few possessions.
that's what i also noticed. he's terrible all around. no usage and terrible when he is used, with no defensive or rebounding numbers. i knew he somehow maintained decent +/-, but i have no idea how.
well collins is nothing if not consistent. another night, another 20 minutes, another 0-2, 0 points, 1 rebound, 2 fouls night.
