I wouldn't equate the massacre of thousand of innocent lives and children losing their mothers and fathers with someone's personal growth, but that's just me.
The only political stance that is Anti- American is thinking that someone's position is Anti American. Why do you people care? Who gives a crap? It reminds me of what Vernon Maxwell said to Avery Johnson before a game when Avery blessed Vernon; "This is a Mutha F#@kin basketball game Mutha F#@ka, God ain't got F#@k-all to do with it!" I think America fits very appropriately in that phrase, too. It shouldn't matter what political position Steve takes, he is just as American. That includes the position of not caring about America. Quit being small minded.
The world don't move to the beat of just one drummer, what might be good for you may not be good for some, it takes 'Different Strokes' ..........I say it takes 'Different Strokes' ...........yes it does....
I strongly agree with Flagrant1 and Fromobile. It is everyones choice to do what they want. If you feel like doing it fine, if you do not fine. You are still as American as the next person!!!
Did anyone ever find out exactly what was behind the 'bend at the waist thing' anyway? I mean do any of us know why they did it? Hell, it could mean something more than any of us realize. I'm glad that he was standing during the Anthem like most people do. But whatever the case, it's not a reason to think he's not patriotic. The whole 'I'm more of an American than you are' thing is sadly misguided...
everyone has the choice to do what they want, but must realize your actions has consequences. ....think about it and make the best decision.
This is the theme to Gary's show, the opening theme to Gary's show. Gary called me up one day and asked me to write his theme song.
Nubiannoun) Dark-skinned descendants of Northeast Africa but I'm sure you could have looked that up.........
Oh my god!! what has happened to my beloved BBS?? Facts of Life and Different Strokes title lyrics in one thread??? The season can't start soon enuff for me!
I agree with that totally. I think a few people on this board miss the point of standing during the Anthem entirely (SteveFrancis410 and Achebe in particular). Hundreds of thousands of people have died in defense of our ideals over the past 224 years and that includes the ideal to not agree with each other. However the point is to show - when- - especially during an event in the U.S., made possible by the ideals that were defended by so many - played by people that make huge amounts of money made possible by those same ideals - on public display before thousands of impressionable people who idolize these players why- - it shows that you are respectful of the reasons listed above. A lot of players don't give a crap about anything or anybody. - it shows you understand you would not be able to make your own choice to play basketball or anything else if it weren't for our country.
I'm not really sure why I bother with this thread, but... As a defender of American freedom, I fight for our rights and believe in the beauty of free expression that has been earned by the blood of our forefathers. However, Sept 11th marked a change in our modern society. Not everyone has had a significant emotional change that many of us underwent on that day, but trust me if UBL has his way every American's way of life will be changed. While I love basketball and enjoy watching our Rocks in action. I have never considered athletes heroes. While they must deal with an immense amount of public scruitiny and attention, we must put them in their proper place...they're entertainers. Entertainers don't pull people out of burning buildings, throw themselves in front a bullet meant for the POTUS, or fight our enemies on foreign soil. Entertainers sacrifice by devoting themselves to their profession and giving up some of their personal freedoms. Many entertainers understand that because they garner so much attention from the public, they owe something back to the society that supports them and their profession. Others don't. As for this topic, I hope we can refrain from this type of banter and talk about real basketball issues. Frankly, my props go to the firefighters and policemen that went back into the WTC to save lifes...to the normal Americans that attacked the terrorist on the flight in PA and took one for us...and to the men and women of our military that are risking their lives while showing the Taliban what America is all about...the external fight for freedom.
That's whack; there are professional athletes all over the world. Just because a man has more financial fortitude than you does not give you the right to judge him. Worry about yourself first before calling someone else out for being careless. The beer man wasn't standing did ya'll have something to say about him too? America isn't perfect and neither are Americans. You go to a game to watch basketball and when the anthem comes on you have the freedom to stand or sit and if you are standing pray for those sitting and focus on the flag. If you were focusing on the flag you shouldn't have noticed who(famous or not)was sitting and we could instead be posting about basketball. .............east.
Please... Name a professional athelete in another country that makes what A-Rod does... Wouldn't be possible in another country. What would our most wealthy athletes make in other countries ..... A lot LESS. I just think that those who are more fortunate than they ordinarily would have been as a result of this country should show 2 seconds respect for it. The beer man should show some respect too - he goes home, watches his Direct TV, drinks some beer, can go to the hospital when he is sick, drives a decent car, probably owns his home, has decent clothes, and gets to go to pro sports games on weekends. Tough life! You don't think this guy should show some respect to America either? He benefits a hell of a lot from it too! A lot of people really, really take what we have for granted big time. I suggest they go visit nearly ANY other country. I have visited many other countries and I can tell you from experience we do have a lot to be thankful and respectful for.
I have a hard time talking about this whole subject. Three months ago would we have had this conversation. the events of the last month has changed a lot of views that people once had. whenever there is a war people become more patriotic. this is not a good time to be talking about this because peoples views of the subject are somewhat clouded or they have been changed dramaticly. Ask yourself this, would I have made this big of a deal out of this 1 year ago? If you can honestly say yes good for you. but if you cant do not go bashing some athlete or another person who may not agree. thats what is great about america as long as your views do not harm another person they can be yours. that is what makes america great, not how well you stand during the national anthem
How many of you who criticized Francis and Mobley actually know <b>why</b> they did it? How many of you bothered to find out <b>why</b> they did it? <i>"I just say my prayers," Francis said. "I pay my respects to my family, focus in on the game and pray for the outcome of the game, that no one gets hurt."</i> Wow, what an unamerican ******* . . .
First of all, what's with that Hillary Clinton comment? Secondly, do any of you actually stand at home while watching the anthem on TV? I've never heard of that. Hilarious. Look, I stand when ever the anthem is played at a public event, just to show my respect. However, if I chose not to stand, it wouldn't mean that I didn't care or respect America. It would mean that I simply didn't feel like standing, and that is my business. This should be none of your business as well. Either way, Steve and Cuttino should not have to hear about such a trivial matter from fans. It is their business. Let's worry about more important business, like not catching Anthrax. And I will continue to stand for the anthem, no matter what country I am in, and no matter how sore my legs are.
