    Martial-arts film pairs Chan, Li

    By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

Lionsgate has boarded martial-arts actioner "The Forbidden Kingdom," which pairs Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time on the bigscreen.
Indie studio is planning a September 2008 domestic release. Casey Silver produces.

The Weinstein Co. is partnering with Lionsgate on the project, picking up distrib rights in Spain, France and Latin America. Lionsgate will distribute in the U.K.

Director Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King," "Stuart Little") is set to begin lensing the pic in China on May 2 from a script by John Fusco. Action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, who has worked on films including "The Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," is creating the fight sequences.

Relativity Media is financing the pic, with company topper Ryan Kavanaugh taking an exec producer credit. Relativity will handle foreign sales.

"Casey Silver scored a real coup in bringing together two titans of martial arts, Jackie Chan and Jet Li," Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said.

Based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king, story revolves around an American teenager who discovers the king's legendary stick weapon in a pawn shop. Teen is transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors fighting to free the imprisoned king.

Li is set to play two roles, that of the monkey king and the silent monk. Chan will pay the monk T'sa-Ho.

When promoting the U.S. bow of Li's most recent movie, "Fearless," Rogue Pictures touted it as his last martial-arts epic. "Forbidden" is being described as more of an action-adventure with fight sequences.

Yeah seriously. I thought it was his last ever. I guess not.

Oh well can't say you're sad about Jet Li coming back. He's pretty cool.

If this movie is supposed to revolve around some American teenager that gets transported back in time, then this movie will rely on who they cast as that teenager as much as it will rely on Chan or Li.

Edit: For me, that is. If I have to see Haley Joel Osment try to roundhouse kick somebody, the world would end.

I won't be too suprise if it's another stupid movie...

Hollywood directors and script writers has never put up a good one for these two guys compare to the old golden HK movies.

It shouldn't be a surprise. Jet Li also once said that he was done making wire-fu movies, and then proceded to make a series of more wire-fu movies.

I think he gets an idea in his head, and says it, without really thinking that he might change mind.

It can't be worse than Bulletproof Monk.

IMO Jackie Chan should play the Monkey King and Jet Li the Monk. I'm also wondering if they will also have the Pig warrior and Shark warrior who also went with the Monkey King and the Monk in the legend.

Sammo Hung would be a good choice to play the pig warrior, I guess.

What/who is the Shark warrior though? (sorry I am not that familiar with the legend)
